I am a beginner free-diver, and I'm looking for some training advice. I live in New Jersey, so it's still pretty cold up here, so dry land training would be the best for now. I used to SCUBA, but the waters up here aren't the best, and finding a partner was a pain.

Thanks,
-J

Check out [ame="http://forums.deeperblue.net/showthread.php?t=64959"]this thread[/ame], your breath-hold time will really increase with a little work with the tables.

Welcome to DB :)

Vent - Breathing.
Static - Holding your breath.

Example:
Vent Static
2:00 2:00

No problem, if you have any other questions please feel free to ask them.

I am also interested in beginning dry training for breath holding, but am unsure of the dangers involved in holding ones breath. I am very new to freediving, and have tried to read as much as possible, but am finding mixed information on the dangers to the lungs and body from extended breath holding. Will I be okay beginning to use those tables to practice. By the way I am perfectly healthy and 20, if it is useful info.

I just took my first few initial timed breaths right before I was about to go to sleep, and your mindset makes a huge difference in time.

My first two times all I could think about was breathing and the clock, and I clocked in at 50 secs.

The third time I relaxed and let my mind drift and I clocked in at 1:40.

I know it's nothing compared to most of you, but it's a start

Thanks,
-J

Oh I experienced the same thing, my interest was in doing a table but I am not sure my body wasn't co-operating with me. I aborted it after the first hold. I knew that I wasn't ready to do that :(.

You will progress very fast. I was in the same boat as you in January. I felt so great passing 1 minute and then it just kept on going from there. You will experience many different sensations when you progress your time. I myself hit a mental block at 3:45... it took me a little while to over come it but I managed to do it quite easily. Keep progressing and keep up the good work :). It also helps if you read A LOT on this forum. There are some very wise people on here.
