Hi my name is Luke Butel and I'm a young beginner spearo. I have a few questions about spearfishing gear and bits about spearfishing.

Firstly I am looking at getting a new gun as the one I am currently using is a cheap useless french thing that a mate got from Cherbourg, what length and type would best suit spearfishing in Alderney and Guernsey in the Channel Islands, the areas tend to be weed and rocky beaches/coasts or rock points or sandy beaches, also the water is pretty clear.

Secondly, I do not use a weight belt at the moment but want to get one as I have been told and read that they are a vital bit of kit, what type and how much weight will I need?

How long is a usual dive down, and how long do most divers spend sat waiting on the bottom or in amongst weed and rock?

Any information on any of the above would be a great help.

Thank you

Luke Butel.

Hi Dave, I am currently back home on Alderney as I have just finished my first year of college in Guernsey. I think my host family I stay with in Guernsy know some of the people from DeeperBlue.

Cheers

Luke.

Hi Luke. is that Elizabeth college sixth form, year 12 or the College of Further Education, post 16 courses?

Not much access to gear actually in Alderney but what a great place to live (and spear).

Guernsey has a few spearo shops but lots of stuff can be ordered cheap off the internet.

Have a good read of DB over the next few days (you are on your hols). look at the Guernsey thread and use the search button (above) to look for other things that take your fancy. Check out the hall of Fame link in my signature.

Hi Dave, I'm at the College of F.E doing the sports course and will be back there in September to do my second year.

Yeah it's great over here in Alderney for the summer and the spearfishing is amazing, so many good little secret spots and places to spearfish.

I have used a few sites to get my gear so far like the Apnea site in Jersey and one in the UK.

What is the DB which you said to read? And were is the search bar?

cheers

Luke.

DB is just shorthand for Deeper Blue the name of this site. I was just suggesting you read around the site. There are threads for Guernsey, for many areas on the south coast of england as well as threads about guns, beginning spearing etc. The search button is ner the top of the page on the right hand side in a blue bar.

Dave.
