This maybe the ultimate noobie question but here goes.

I just got a seatec elastic belt with buckle. Never used one before, but this year will be using a wetsuit for the first time. after attaching the buckle to the belt I don't seem to be able close it, it just pops open. I set it up as per a pic. I found on the net, is that correct? Maybe from the snaps someone can see whats happening? To me it seems the belt is too thick and the teeth on the buckle aren`t engaging? the belt measured with my ruler　at nearly 3mm thick. anyone know how to solve this/ or know what I'm doing wrong? thanks

If you want a weight belt for spearfishing get a 'marseillaise' belt and leave the rest to scubadivers and Italians (just kidding spaghetti!).

The 'quick release' belt you just bought will fail you sooner or later, i.e. at an inopportune moment you will inadvertantly open it or it will open independently. However, the issue you are encountering is somewhat smaller when there is (more) traction on the belt.

Well, it's not that bad, really.
Which buckle is the best, that seems to be a matter of taste as much as it is one of facts.

Those buckles want some force to be applied before they close properly, so don't be afraid to push down hard.
Then try closing the buckle under tension, or pulling from both sides of the buckle after pushing down the lever, that will close it better.

play around with it and You'll find out how to best keep the thing shut.

I think the problem lies in the way you have attached the belt to the buckle. It looks like there is a double thickness of rubber over the top of it, so when you bring the loose end in there is about 9mm of rubber in the way of the clip closing. Try rearranging that so there is only one layer of rubber running over the top.

Pastor's right. Try just running the closed end straight through the 2 holes in the buckle, with a few inches poking out underneath. Don't fold anything. It should work on most belt buckles, and that's what I use. But make sure it's got good friction by trying to pull the buckle off before you use it.

I use commercial buckles which look identical to yours but I use 5mm thick neoprene (synthetic rubber) material for the belt. I find the thicker material more comfortable. It's stronger and less likely to strech too far and slip when fully loaded ie over 20lb of weights. It fits in a standard buckle so I doubt belt thickness is the problem. As hinted at the buckle needs to be fully closed but more importantly needs to be in tension. The part of the buckle (with teeth) that grips the belt end is below the pivot pin with the handle part of the buckle above and this creates a sort of over centre cam action. Pulling on the belt closes it tighter and tighter.

Putting one pass of the belt rather than two through the slots in the buckle will create less bulk (that's what I do) but I think you just need to press hard and pull the belt tight. Bound to work as it's so simple.

Thanks all, with a bit of messing about I get it to have a single layer of belt in the buckle. That and giving it a good pull seems do do the trick.

Next is a diveskin wetsuit, and I will have completed my kit I think.

Monchan are you really in Japan...if so you should have no problem finding a scarf, I'd suggest you add a kimono over the suit, should give you a sense of gradeur, as well as secrecy to your agenda, add carry the gun strapped on your back ala samurai.rofl

kidding aside, I read someplace that you can not use spearguns (as of lately in Japan only spear poles) is this true?...I would like to someday, in the near future go to Japan, for at least a month I think it rocks, as an ID I know it has been very involved with all things "design"

That would make for one hell of a photo for the photo comp. if it gets going again.

As for spearguns being banned in Japan, yeah it's true. But as with everything else in Japan there is a bit of an underground scene and private spearfishing clubs. I think the americans down in Okinawa are a bit more open about it though.

I have only used a polespear, but have got myself a gun for this season. After talking to some people around, the problem mainly lies with the fishermen who think all divers are after their shellfish. If you getconfronted you say sorry and go home, try to convince them you are only taking fish or change spots and things should be ok. where I go with my polespear the locals know I only want some fish and leave me alone. With my gun though It's only going to be used on certain days like if I can get out on a boat or drive to some more isolated spots.

quite a lot of people use them here though, the spearfishing sites are funny. As a lot of people put photos up of their catch but hide their faces.

I don't know mate, but on some of the other sites it's the same a large number of girls. I've never met any though, in fact where I live I've never met another spearo. Have only talked to a few on the web. All the more fish for me I guess.

But sometimes the girls here have bigger balls than the guys.
