Best fins for shore hunting.

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Although I have not used a great variety of fins, I can certainly recommend Cressi fins if you are looking for something durable. I use an ancient pair of Rodine Garas (pretty sure they haven't made these things for years) given to me by my dad. He used them often (as a dive master/instructor) for many years (30?) before giving them to me. I still use them once a week and I beat them up on rocks every time. Still work fine.

Any idea of price?

I’ve had mine for coming up 3 years now and I think I paid £150-ish for them, but I’ve no idea how much they would be now.
I started off with Cressi fins but found the foot pockets way to tight, bought the Nemo’s next and apart from a very brief try with a set of Special Fins it’s been the Nemo’s all the way.

I'm interested that the Omer Ice fins are not mentioned here - is that because they are more of a soft surface fin (and not included in the original question)? i have broken 2 fins over the last year and so has OMD, + probably several others out there too... so this thread makes interesting reading for me - not wanting to get stuck out there with yet another broken fin...
Are fibreglass fins sooo much stronger?
(sorry dont mean to hijack the thread, hope its within the topic)

Sound like a great, durable fin! A little out of my current budget though

I'm utterly landlocked at the moment and can't really justify spending that much on fins I might only use 2 or 3 times this year... I think I'm either going to go with Omer Millenium's (medium hardness) or some of the Cressi Gara's - probably the Omer's - nice and cheap, look like a good 'starter' fin.

I can always upgrade next year

Definately on topic! I've been really suprised that they haven't been mentioned yet - I was under the impression that the Ice's were the last word in shallow water fins!

I think I prefer the ice fins to any others I've tried including Nemo's and carbons. They really work well for me as a surface fin and down to the 30 odd foot that's my maximum. However as Jonny said they break - well mine did anyway.

I have Nemo's in omer footpockets and they are nice blades although I think mine are the softer ones and medium would be better. They do seem very tough.

I got mine second hand but spent ages looking for new ones. The Canadian suppliers want about £50 shipping which makes them expensive. DB member Dobs runs a dive shop in Bulgaria and has a web site. He sells blades for well under £100, nearer £70 I think. However he is not really geared up for web sales and mainly sells within Bulgaria and surrounding regions (no credit cards, pay pal etc only complex banking money transfers).

The German web site that used to supply Nemo's doesn't any more.

One of the London newbies was getting some recently I think by getting a relative to buy them and ship them privately from Bulgaria or nearby. Sorry name escapes me as to who it was.

Time was Nemo's were the only budget GRP blades but I think there are a few others now. Omer?

If you don't dive much the Omer Milleniums with their plastic blades are good value for money and you can upgrade the blades later using the excellent footpockets.

Dave.

Oh, that's really interesting Jonny. I had heard of one guy (in Devon I think) breaking one, I didn't realise that you and OMD had too - although Foxfish hinted at it recently. Do they snap when you push off the sea floor? Most importantly have Omer or your supplier replaced them quickly and without quibbling?

The Beuchat Mundial Competitions cost about £50 (I think I paid 60+ but shortly afterwards they went on sale for 40 something), fitted great from the beginning (I use them with socks in winter & bare foot in the summer) - must have been using them 4 years or more now. No signs of giving up the ghost either. BTW there is/was somebody selling Seacsub spearo fins at great prices (£25-£35) on eBay, from down in Paignton/Torbay, S. Devon. Forum member ScottWilson is based round there and might know who/where it was. [My back-up mask & snorkel are Seacsub - they seem to be pretty good, the mask especially. I was tempted to buy a pair of the Seasub fins but figure the Beuchats are going to last a real long time - and the technology & materials may well move on by the time they need replacing].

My ice fins are still in one piece but I guess it is only a matter of time!
Thing is i still use my twenty year old jet fins because they suit most of my hunting conditions. I regularly stand up in shallow weed beds or tread water only just over my height, long fins are useless in these conditions. However I can still swim against the tide & get down to reasonable depths with these ancient fins, obviously my ice fins are more efficient but my point is you can use even basic fins & catch fish.

Cheers Dave, that's what i was thinking!

Am I right in assuming that the foot pockets will take the Ice blades?

Yes. Almost all foot pockets with removable blades are interchangable even different makes eg Nemo blades in Omer footpockets. Ocasionally you need to drill the odd fixing hole but basically they're all the same.

i broke 4 ice blades in a season so wouldn't recommend them!
just got some nemo's in the post from waterway- blades only they cost about £95 including any tax or shipping. Fitted in my omer pockets they look good although they do look a bit blue peter ( a bit home made ) guess i'll have to test them as soon as we get some good weather!

Same here: my Omer Ice are still ok (and working great: best plastic fins I've ever had) but I keep my fingers crossed (and bring a pair of spare blades in my bag everytime).

Next for me will be C4 Wahoo Brown when my Ice will let me down.
