Hi, I was thinking to do an AIDA instructor course in in march or april of next year (2012). But is the AIDA one the most professional or is there a better agency or instructor course in Dahab around that time?
I want to be finished before May so I can go to Honduras, Roatan as a safety diver in the competition with possibly William Trubridge.
By the way anyone know the prerequisite for ADIA instructor course?

Thanks you for answering and merry Christmas!

I think the quality of the education you receive greatly repents on your ability to identify and question.

If you're a total beginner you learn a lot with any freedive system. The choice of these systems depends on what type of person / diver you are and availability.
Also what kind of instruction do you like to have. Would you like to learn principles and or a set of tricks?

My suggestion is to first map out what kind of person you are and what sort of instruction style you like. From this viewpoint research several instructors, read through their bio's, posts, watch some videos, etc. And then contact a few with your questions and see what they can offer you, and if their offer fits your needs.

As of now I have not heard about any very bad instructors, so I think those who are out there are delivering the expected and more. In other words you cannot go very wrong.

Personally I like to learn from different instructors, so this will give me much more of a multi perspective outlook on freediving. Also every instructor has their strong and weaker points, I like to filter out the best ingredients for my use, but I also like to know the alternatives because I may be able to help someone else with these.

I hope this get you inspired, thinking and going :)

Kars

Thanks for the answer. I would like to teach beginners and also a bit more experienced freedivers. I'm hardly a total beginner myself but I'm not yet very experienced, I have only been freediving intensive for 5 months and made it to 50m a few weeks ago. Anyway what organization is best to be a certified instructor with? For getting a job and in general.
I mean would you say that doing a SSI instructor course is good enough, I've heard that they are a joke if you compare them to other 100% freediving organizations.
Anyone know what different freedive organizations there are in Dahab?

Well... "been freediving intensive for 5 months" does not sound my kind of freediving instructor.

What comes Freedive Dahab instructors -one of the best.

My modest opinion.

I think there's an instructor course with Stavros coming up in Sharm (apnea one if I am not wrong). Looks like you could do our 4* (prerequisite) as an optional part of the course

I'm not planing to teach professionals right away, I will work side by side with another instructor at least the first year. I'm just going to start dedicate my life to freediving, you can't already have loads of experience before you have done any teaching.
Anyway thanks for letting me know about freedive dahab, will check if they have a instructor course coming up.

Not sure FDD do AIDA courses anymore but do check with Linda

Hello Ramora,

As was stated before, It does not matter so much what org you are learning under as much as it matters who you are learning from. That being said, AIDA still offers more freedom than the SSI options. It allows you to teach where you want, and not only out of an SSI dive school if you don't want to. We are running an AIDA instructor course in Dahab on April 15th-27th. 2 Places left on the course right now. Stavros is Running one in Sharm the month ealier. We all have a lot of experince in teaching freediving so either course option will give you good results and the skills you need to teach. The 4 star is running just before our course as well. FDD as I understand it, is not running AIDA instructor courses any more. This was the last news I heard from a friend who contacted them for a course. Email them to confirm this though. Good luck and all the best,

Dean Spahic

Hi Dean thanks for the info. Do you know the email address to contact them and see if they still have spots left.

Hi Remora

Last I heard Lotta from FDD was still an AIDA Instructor Trainer and still running instructor courses. If she is no longer running AIDA courses then Wendy Timmermans (Total Freedive - freediving school in Dahab, Egypt) is arguably the best AIDA instructor working in Dahab. There was a bit of an oversight within the AIDA EC when the new ITs were appointed and Wendy was unfortunately overlooked despite being one of the most qualified. I'm sure Dean will be able to confirm that this is being remedied ASAP and that Wendy should have IT status by the time you want to do your course. Katya (Dean's partner) is also a very experienced instructor and so too is Konstantin (www.aqualibrium.ru). You're actually quite spoilt for choice at the moment in Egypt.

Also Martin Stepanek (FII) is running an instructor course in Dahab during the first half of 2012.

Hope this helps,
John

Would like to correct this as I checked the FDD site and they do offer the AIDA instructor courses (guessing Lotta is teaching them)

Wow thank you so much for all info guys I really appreciate it. How do I get in contact with the instructors, anyone have their mail or a link to the web page.

So If I'm lucky I might be able to start training with Martin Stepanek, would be damn nice.

Hi
"Best course"?
"Best system/agency"?

Becoming an instructor is fairly easy. Usually some 40 meters is the pre-requisite, usually meaning you have to master frenzel. Apart from that (assuming you are socially/mentally stable) it is just about paying the money.
If you haven´t done the levels, most agencies will fastlane you through this (since they want your money).

Which agency has the courses that are best?
Which agency will help you sell your courses?
Which brand is strongest?
No one can really answer this, freediving is still young.
Teaching beginners is a pretty straightforward business, where there are no real magic tricks, or superior systems.
I think most systems have a similar approach.

If you just want to get "a certificate", then choose the shortest, cheapest course.
If you want to become a good instructor, start of with diving more than 5 months.
Freediving students are .... how shall I put this... a diverse bunch of personalities... and understanding "who" they are and why they are there at the course is, according to me, essential - thus some psychology is useful. And the ability to improvise and use "the standard" in a constructive manner.

As opposed to scuba - there are situations where there are no universal answer.
"When shall I turn"?
"How much shall I breath before"?
"How much weight shall I have"?
These are questions no instructor manual will (or at least should not) give you one simple answer.

And this is why freediving instruction is so rewarding... for the instructor.

On the subject "what is a good freediving course" I have been thinking:
How to choose a freediving course
