Sphera - low volume, very flexible which means it can sort of equalize itself to a certain point by flexing to your face, but has bad vision due to plastic and curved lenses.

Fluid goggles - no vision at all... :) only for competition diving, allows for hands free equalization, no need to equalize mask - so it saves air for eq. of your ears.

I have a Marina - it has perfect vision, very low volume, but it is quite stiff - for equalization its sort of an on/off thing, it asks for eq. very suddenly.

Scubapro Futura 1 - very good over-all mask for uw-rugby, spearfishing and freediving. Rugged, and quite good visibility for such a low volume mask.

Technique is more important than volume. Until about 60 meters, there a lot of 'low volume' masks available that will work fine but for some of us there are very few that fit. Comfort and visibility are usually more important.

The glass of Technisub Marina, resp. the successor Technisub Mikromask is very close to the eyes - it practically almost touches them (at least on my face) which gives quite an amazing field of view, but does not allow form much compression. I never tried diving without equalizing the mask, so cannot tell how deep you could go, but do not see much sense in it - for shallow dives, not needing to equalize the mask won't give you any advantage, and at deep dives you need to equalize the mask anyway, and I don't think it gives much advantage if you start compensating the mask at 20m against doing it continuously from the beginning. Well, overall, a mask with a big inner volume on the surface but well compressible is better from this point of view, but if you are not going to break records, the low volume masks like the Mikromask are more comfortable and offer superior vision. I would definitely advise against diving without compensating it though - you only risk bursting capillaries in your eyes and/or nose, or other damages. I also do not know what overpressure the glass in diving mask can withstand, but I guess it should be more than your eyes can.

Hi TheDude,

could you please tell me, how deep you can take the marina wothout equalising it?
(look here: http://forums.deeperblue.net/freediving-equipment/74000-mask-deep-diving-please-add-your-data.html)

Thanks a lot for your help,

Marc
Hi Marc,

sorry, but I did not try it without equalising yet... And it's kind of too cold now to go diving :). But as said before, the marina is really not very flexible, I would say it's good for around 10-15 meters, but thats just a rough estimate...

Hi Dude,

thanks for your answer,

trux,
what mask would you suggest, if the sphera doesnt fit, because the "bridge" over the nose is to deep. should be higher for me, like the marina....
i think, that if the mask is more flexible, i dont have so much "stress" diving down, because i have more time to compensate without damaging my eyes if i forget it....

greetings marc

i just got the marina in koh lanta, thailand while taking aida 2 course last week and it's a pretty sweet mask.. super low volume, but as thedude mentions, it asks for eq very suddenly, i guess due to such low volume.. i dove with omer alien before i got the marina and the alien allows for more time to "feel" the need to eq.. hope that makes sense. :)

hi peacenluv,

it makes sense, what you say.
Can you remember, at what depth it asks for equalisation?
Do you like the mask?

Anyway, I ordered the technisub micromask/marina in my local diveshop. If it will fit my face, I will by it.
The Problem where I live is, no diveshop has a variety of apnea/spearfishing masks. not even the omer alien. So there is no chance to compare the masks and try them on :-( ... So you just can order one.

greetings
marc

Tirgata Frameless

I use this mask for spearing, fun. and the cressi for line diving..
The tirgata frameless is really low wolume, and the one glass makes the vision great.. alot of fogging thoe. but this workes with a antifog formula.
this is the only "regular" mask I have used that doesnt give me pains in the forehead. as it seems all 2glass masks have a way of pressing into my forehead, witch makes it painfully to use more than an hour.

hi marc,

around 6-7m today, gave a good tug on my eyeballs.. but i just learned frenzel so i equalize more often now, both ears and mask so don't really get squeezes as much.. :) i think if it fits your face, you will like it.. as some people mentioned before, the silicon is a little more stiff and may leak a lil with facial movements, but hasn't been a real problem for me.. i like it cause it is very easy to equalize and very low volume and prefer it over the alien.. hope it's a good fit for u.. ;)

peace,
phill

hi peacanluv,

thanks for your answer. i read on the forum that everyone who ones the marina loves it. so i will hope it will fit my face and it will not be too expensive.
unfortunately i will have to wait befor i can test it in deep diving, but i will test it in the pool imediately ;-)

greeting,
marc

At least I'm not aware of any masks that even compare to the sphera in terms of compressibility. It definitely has it's weaknesses (for me the main frustration is the lenses popping off occasionally and the scratching of the lenses), but it really is the mask of choice for deep diving for that reason only.

But, as already pointed out, I don't think it makes much of a difference unless you're diving very deep. For recreational diving, spearfishing or even intermediate level constant weight, there are much, MUCH better masks than the Sphera. For example the mentioned micromask (which I'd buy, but I'm having a really hard time finding, why oh why didn't I fork out the cash when I had it in my hands in Nice)

If anyone knows of a solid competitor (or in fact not solid) for Sphera, I would really like to know! I keep getting 'em but I really don't like the mask that much for obvious reasons...I don't think even the manufacturer really understands what makes it so great, since they "fixed" all of the good qualities in the micromask. We need a flexible mask that stays together damn it!

Fluidgoggles, pipemasks et all are nice toys, but you can do very well without them. I believe for example Martin does world record level dives with a mask...Personally, while not quite WR level, I've never found the volume of the mask to be the restricting factor in my dives. Dealing with the disorientation of a pair of wrongly adjusted fluid goggles or the trouble of equalizing a pipe mask much more so :)

no prob marc.. my aida instructor had the marina and i had my alien and i had a chance to try it out and compare the 2.. and it just so happened they had it in one of the dive stores, Lanta Divers, on Koh Lanta island Thailand. i bought it for around usd65-70 (THB2250)..

simo, maybe u can write them and see if they'll send one to you (Scandinavian Lanta Diver, Kohlanta, Thailand).. it's owned by swedes so maybe they'll help a fellow scandinavian.. :) i actually lived in finland for 5 years a while back and have been through tampere a few times.. quite cold for diving, eh? good luck with the mask.. oh yeah, the dive shops in Koh Lanta give 20% discount to instructors, at least that's what i heard..

Hi Jome,

I wanted to find out exactly what you asked, an alternative to the sphera for those people, who dont like it or where it doesnt fit their face.

Unfortunately there seems to be no real comparable mask.

To the Micromask:
I taked to my divingshop. The micromask will be released in 2008 as "new". Whatever that will mean. But the diveshop was able to order one. Aqualung is the constributor for germany.
If you know it fits and you want to order it I fond it for less than 40 Euro in an Italian onlineshop. Dont have the link in the office.

I think I will get along with the micromask quite well as I would consider myself as a beginner to deepdiving. And I think I will like it in the pool for dynamic because it seems to be more streamlined than my old mask.

greeting
marc

I use the Omer Abyss and the Instinct by Sporasub and would recommend both. The abyss is easier to equalize and the instinct offers better field of vision. Unless you're diving deep, I would look for comfort and vis.
