So which in your opinion is the best money for value u/w camera??

There are many options over the net (gopro, olympus, etc) and its so hard to decide...

What I need is good video and option to take pictures every 2 secs as the gopro.

Any idea?

I bought a Panasonic TS-1 last year. The camera itself is only good to 10', but I always use it in a housing with an INON wide angle lens. If the housing ever floods I know that the camera will be safe. I bought it because of its small size and ability to shoot HD video.

If I were looking for something new today I might have a look at the new Canon S-90. I think I read that they upgraded it to shoot HD video. It didn't shoot HD at the time I bought my last camera so I crossed it off my list.

Gopro with eyeofmine housing is an AMAZING deal! It's small and has a huge array of toys that can be attached to the camera given new angles and ideas other cameras would not be able to achieve. Wide angle is almost required if you are shooting underwater.
Only downside is that you can not easily compose an image due to it's lack of LCD.

On the photography side. The g11/12 or it's little sister the S95 would be the best option to go. Both cameras will give you amazing quality photos, fully controllable , and will shoot in raw to allow for the greatest editing possible.

I've got the G11 and LOVE it. It's a bit pricey though. Even for dry photography it's great, I've actually just about stopped using my DSLR althogether now that I carry my G11 with me.

I have heard lots about the G11, fancied one myself and nearly bought one in Melbourne this year. (but then knew my birthday was coming up so waited ;) )

i have the Sony Cybershot W390, really pleased with it. it has an underwater function that you turn on from about 12 metres (or depending on the light zone and how much colour you have lost in your surrounds). in the indian ocean i turn it on around this depth, and it compensates for loss of red. no need for those plastic red filters.

really please with the pictures as well, as i am not the greatest photographer however the camera does a lot of the work.

the attached photo was taken of me and some students at 30metres, without a flash and using the u/w function.
the other one was taken at about 13 metres.

Please can you post some freedive image sample with the gopro and G11?

What I want to do is to put it on the bottom plate, sea bottom or buoy and catch photos or video. My depth limit is abt -15m clear waters.

Great! Thanks for sharing Frank! Good quality indeed.

May I see some Gopro too please to compare?

Hey Frank, nice shots. Where is Blue Wall Reef. that looks very good!

Hi Connor, it's in San Andres, Island, Colombia. The place where I grew up. That reef is a coral wall, with a depth of 330 feet, it's marvelous !

Two short movies taken with the Gopro HD

The Gopro is quite ok if you want to shoot movies, typically for minutes at a time without caring too much about artistic outcome. More and more people use it just mounted on the wrist to record whole dives (instructors) while swimming or moving around. I wouldn't use it however for serious underwater pictures. It is extremely practical and simple (only on/off).

I don't have the G11, I have the G7 with underwater housing and it's absolutely great. I should say "was", because recently it stopped working for no reason, and Canon said I should replace optics and motherboard... for the same price of a new camera. Problem is each model has a different housing, and now I am left wondering what to do. Probably buy another G7 from ebay.

i recently got a e-pl1 and have been pretty happy with photos from it

its around the same price a g10, g11 cameras and shoots hd video and has a much larger sensor

How did u modified the lense? You bought the patend ready or you made it your self?

its self made, or more accuratly, I let my brother make it as he is less sloppy than me with the shop skills, it looked about identical to the german goforfocus housing but the edges were beveled and polished and I think that eliminated the round edges in the frame underwater that you see in some of the other fixes, you basically use all the original hardware from the housing, just replace the dome lense with a flat piece of plexi I was very happy with it but lost it to the sea on my last trip so no pics of it, my brother is making me a new one right now so I'll post something on it when I get it, post some pictures as well but dont think i'll get it today as planned but its only 5 megapix so it not going to take stills as well as the newer digital still cameras its mostly for video, as for composing shots thier is no view finder or lcd but if you use the headstrap mount and adjust it properly it will basicsally film everything you are looking at you almost forget you even have a camera on you and just enjoy your dive, the video I posted was all hand held before I started using the headstrap I'll have to work out a better way to teather the new one so I dont loose it

keep in mind too actuall footage is a bit cleaner than youtube, also it was shot in 720 I havnt yet been able to take advantage of true 1080hd yet cause my laptop cant handle editing it need a quicker prosseser or new computer for that its quite demanding
