Hello, I have a JBL Specialty Series Speargun (Travel Magnum Combo, JBL Spearguns). The (partial) specs from the website are: Overall Length (Short/Long setup): 32"/ 55" (81cm/140cm) Reach: 12/25 ft. (3.6m/7.6m) The length given above is the whole gun's length without the spear, the barrel/tube length is 43cm/102cm. I also have 2 other guns (a short and a long one) but one I don't use them often, I usually let my friends use them. I am thinking of purchasing a Beuchat Marlin Revolution and I'm not sure if I should get the 105cm or the 120cm version. I'm not looking for a kelp hunting gun as I will probably use the JBL in "short" setup (so the Beuchat 85cm is probably not worth looking at IMO). I'd like to outfit the Beuchat with a reel (the JBL can't be outfit with one) when I am going in the deep sea and take it off when closer to shore (although I may just end up using the JBL in "long" setup when closer to shore). I won't be going after huge fish but rather small/medium tuna, sea bass (medium to big), normal sized barracudas, etc. I'll be hunting in Spain (Mediterranean and Atlantic (Canary Islands)), Italy, France, Greece, Turkey and the Dominican Republic.

Is the size given by Beuchat the size of the barrel only or the whole gun? Which size would you recommend I get?

Thanks,
Gabriel

PS any good recommendations for a hard travel case that is lockable (either with a internal lock or a padlock)? I was looking at the Mares Pure Instinct Attack Speargun bag, it says I can add a rigid tube inside for better protection.

I found that the Revolution's length is just the barrel's length, so it is comparable to the JBL in that respect.

The JBL boasts almost 8 meters in range and the Revolution "at least 5m", but it (the Revolution) also states it performs like a 120cm gun. That means that either JBL inflates their figures or measure it differently, JBL's gun is very powerful for it's length, or the normal 120cm spearguns the Revolution is compared to are not that powerful.

I still don't know if I should get the revolution in 105cm or 120cm though. Maybe 105 is sufficient for my current use, any ideas?

I use a alu rifle case with foam for my pneumatics. I found a cheap 130 cm Chinese one. I use a longer soft bag (like the Mares) with zip for my band guns. I use a 1-2" plastic drain pipe for the shafts in the soft gun bag.
A larger tube for the guns is to heavy in my opinion. Instead I use pre-made sliced tubes of insulation foam to protect the guns.

I normally lock my bags (soft or hard) using cable strips. Just remember to bring some spare ones in you hand luggage if you need to open the bags in the customs.

I can recommend that put your full name, address and telephone number on the bag and place a sticker saying: "Under Water Fishing Equipment". Knowing the local name for "Spear guns" is normally a good thing if you get stopped in the customs in more exotic countries.

Good luck travelling with your new gun. I would recommend you the 120 cm version for that type of hunting. You can't have enough power in clear waters in my opinion. I would love to have a Marlin Revolution in my collection of guns :)
