I just purchased a Beuchat Mundial 600 and I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this gun. I have yet to use it and I didnt want any surprises when I go out with it. I will be mostly hunting around inshore reefs about 10 meters of water in Okinawa. Any help would be great. Thank you.

Very short range gun for small fish or to be used inside holes to shoot fish at point blank range.

What are considered small fish? I fired it a couple of times in the water at just random things and it seemed to perform very well considering its size. The fish I would be shooting would be like parrot fish and the like. They were in the 5 to 10 pound range. I also saw some coral grouper.

What foxfish means is that because it is a 60cm gun it has a limited range. So in clear water where the fish are spooked more easily and won't come in as close you may be better using a longer gun ie a 90-100cm. But for close range shots against rocks crawling along reefs etc it is ideal especially in bad Vis. Fish size wise it will easily handle fish up to 30lb and probably bigger as long as you can get close to them.

Hope this clears it up a bit

Thank you for answering my questions. The water here is quite clear on a sunny day I can see upwards of 30 meters. I have been able to get close to many good sized fish. I picked this particular gun because I wont be going very deep and im only interested in fish in the 10 to 15 lb range. Not that I wouldnt like to shoot something bigger. In the future after I have gotten a little more experience under my belt I might possibly move up to a bigger gun, right now im just starting out though. I will post some pics when I get them.

No worries bud. That gun Is a very good accurate gun, when your more experienced and you require a longer gun it may be worth getting another commanche (110 or something) if you get on well with your current gun. I say this because you will be used to aiming and how it shoots so you won't have to alter your shooting techniques as both guns will shoot similar, as long as you aim properly along the full length of the gun

Happy hunting

I can really only get Beuchat guns here. There is a very good authorized Beuchat dealer here on Okinawa with a wide selection all the way up to the marlin revolution. Its hard to get other brands here because of regulations and im in the military so its even harder. but anyway thank you for the helpful info I will be posting some catches soon.

There's nothing wrong with beauchat guns. In fact they were used by a world champion in 2004 (I think). Good luck with it mate and get some pics up when you catch

Hmm I wouldn't fancy spearing a 30lb fish with a 2' long gun!
I am not saying it is impossible but, the spear is likely to bonce off a 30lb groupers skull!
Around my way we tend to use 90 cm guns with strong bands to shoot fish in the 2-8lb range in 3-10mt vis.
All the 600 band guns I have seen are flimsy & low powered perhaps your is better quality?

There were several in my initial price range and the mundial competion 600 was the one I picked based on the fit of the component parts. For instance it has an interchangeable handle if it breaks for some reason and the craftsmanship seems solid through out. And the local Japanese fishing clubs frown on spearos "poaching" thier catch. as if. so im keeping my presence low and only hunting in secluded areas. One of them sees a big 'ol gun and they might start throwing rocks and such. haha. but yeah I will try it out in earnest this weekend and give an honest review by monday, and thanks for all the comments and help guys. It means a lot to us new guys. :)

I've only got a rob Allen 700 to compare to, which i feel wpuld handle a big fish. Based around here the only 30lb fish we have is conger eels (and the odd tuna) but the congers are mostly in holes etc so it is close range shooting. Hence why I said it would handle a 30lb fish, not saying I'd recommend it tho. I agree with you tho that if you are regularly hunting 30lb plus fish then I would recommend 90cm+ gun with double bands and 7mm spear.

Sorry if I confused or misled anyone with my comments

No confusion here. Okinawa as you may know is subtropical and the reef systems here are chock full of fish from now until september so I will have no problem finding suitable candidates for my spearing pleasure, all above board and for consumption only of course.

Sounds ideal mate. Good luck fishing, keep us updated with dive/catch reports

Okay, you guys were right on the beuchat 600. It does not have the range for these waters. I was at a nice spot today. I saw many nice fish but out of my range. They were close to me but out of the range of the 600. I did shoot one parrot fish that was in the 4# range but that was because I surprised him in a hole. The place I am spearing is around huge tetrapods and they are what the coral in the area attach themselves to. The visibility is like I would say 50 meters and the fish are a bit skitish. I am not able to dive past 20 meters yet and can only sustain that for 30 secs. I am looking at a Beuchat canon 900 which has considerably more range than my current gun. I cant get any other brand here because of customs regulations. This gun seems like a nice choice considering the enviroment I am fishing in. Any more suggestions?

Sounds like a good gun mate. If the Vis is always good (10m+) and the fish are always skittish maybe even a 110 gun would be good. If you can't get one that length then the 900 would have to do. You want to hide in the coral/reef and wait for the fish to come into range before shooting. I would personally advise anything between 90cm and 160cm for the Vis you are describing. Where I am 5m+ Vis is good but on clear days we can get 15m+ and we generally use guns between 90cm and 140cm. Hope this gives a better insight??

Thanks for the quick reply. The overall length of the 900 is 52 inches which is just over 130cm. The store I go to does sell the canon 1100 which is a beast and has 2 hand grips. It seems a bit unwieldy in the water to me though I tested its heft in the store it a bit on the heavy side. decisions decisions...

Are those the guns with a funny extension bit & a very thin 6mm spear?

Looks like it. If it is I would recommend uprating the spear to a 7mm spear and maybe think about either uprating the rubbers to 18/20mm or using double 16mm rubbers for the fish you are targeting. What you think foxfish?

Yeah it has an extension on the handle for some reason I couldn't see why. It does have dual 16mm bands.
