bifins vs. monofins?

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.

I read somewhere that monofins are faster than longfins.

If that is the case, then why do people wear longfins?

P.S. Funny story- I asked the lady in the scuba shop, and she said that monofins are for girls and longfins are for guys. Lmao

(edit- I just went and read some of the other threads in this section, and decided that this thread belongs in the "beginner" section. Thanks)

It seems to me that a mono fin is better for pure freediving as yes they can be more powerful if worn by somebody that can use it well, but a mono would be more of a hindrance with some of the spear fishing situations, I.e. while crawling along in-between rocks and weed.
In my humblest of opinions there is a need for both within the freedive world depending on your own personal choice.
As for monofins are only for girls, what a load of tosh, I know a few blokes that can go through the water like a jet ski with a mono on, and look cool while doing it.
 
monofin and bifins are two very different pieces of equipement
if i want to go hunting underwater i definitly take my bifins
if i want to do pools underwater i take my monofin
if i want to go down, i take my bifins if i-m allone and monofin if i dive with a buddy and have some surface buoi, because stayng at the surface with monofin is harder than with bifins
to sweem with monofin requiere a specific technique that not everybody is used to...
perhaps that-s why most of the people wear longfins
 
I could be wrong (haven't got a monofin yet) but I believe bi-fins are easier to manoeuvre in whereas monofins are better for going in a straight line more efficiently. So bi-fins are probably better for safety when you might need to change course quickly.

I finally got a chance to visit the freedive store, where they explained everything. I'm getting a huge monofin tomorrow! Yay!
