last wknd in key west i managed to go out both days. on sunday, i got this magnificent mutton snapper, just west of looe key,and east of american shoal. at the roll off. it goes fron 20 to 40 and down to 50 and 60 in spots. challenging freediving for me, but quite productive. i shot this bad boy in about 20 ft of water inside the drop off, coming in off the sand. i got what i considered to be a good shot on him, but he fought like crazy! he started spinning around and freaking out, finally i got him through the gills , put him down on the reef, and silenced him with my knife. end result,: 30.1 inches, 11.9 lbs, gutted . my personal best so far. i love livin in key west!!

good job, looks like you caught the gills just in time,,i can see it was close to tearing away..how do you cook them, grilled i presume, they must taste great..Good work!

very observant. yes, he was close to tearing away. my original shot was a few centimeters high, with a 110cm euro riffe, with a 6.5mm shaft on 2 / 20mm rubbers,(incidently) at about4.5 meters, i hit where i aimed, but his brain was lower than i guessed. these mutton snappers are VERY elusive , (as any florida spearo will attest) but also VERY good! he was fighting really hard i had to be careful not to bend my 17/64 spear, but i grabbed him just in time. MUTTON is really one of my top 3 white fillet type fish. you can cook them numerous ways, for instance i love "blackened" fillets, but in this case, i gave 1/2 the meat away , and the other half , my girlfriend put fillets in flour, then egg white mix, then japanese bread crumbs with a little lemon pepper in the mix, then baked at 375 till done.(8-10 min, i think), served with lemon wedges and some saffron rice. was very good.

true, true. it is my opinion that way too much hype is made of this,i didnt even close the shutters for this one ,(or the last one for that matter) right now gustav is about 75 miles away and it isnt even raining here right now. it has been raining a little so far, but no real wind yet, (if at all) all the stores are open, business as usual, just some rain. the sea is all stirred up , so no spearfishing trips, THAT is the part that sux the worst . i have my boat at my friends house on ramrod. Good diving off there. you go just west of looe key, to the roll off, thats where i got the mutton
