Blue water hunting from a kayak?

Its funny you should choose this video as these are some divers from here in Hawaii. Kayak diving is very fun and has some major advantages however make sure you are prepared for the worst!

Keep in mind that tying of in any sort of current has some inharent dangers. If the current picks up and separates you from your kayak, now your a mile off shore, no kayak.

Alot of kayak divers do drift dives and some will actually use their kayak as a float with a breakaway set up.

Another thing thats good to do is if you are in some current and tied off or anchored hang a trailer line off of the back of your kayak. 100 to 150 feet is adviseable. Many divers use the nylon strapping material as it is small but strong. this way if you get swept down current you have the line to grab on to. I usually clip one end of my 100ft float line to the back of the kayak, and my float to the other end. This ensures that I wont miss the trailer line.

Bring a cell phone and lots of water. It might even be adviseable to get a flare. And last but most important let someone know that you will be doing the kayak trip, when you should be home, and where you are going, and ALWAYS go with a partner!

Im actually going on a Kayak dive today on the south end of Maui. There is an artificial reef a ways off of shore that I have been wanting to check out.
