Boat rebuild

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Looking good so far Mart.
Are there transverse frames in the bottom of the boat? its hard to tell from the photo with the deck cut-out; or is the deck supported longitudinally?
Will you be sealing the deck to make it fully watertight?

Jonny the boat has two foam ribs running down the length of the boat & the deck has two glassed over double ply supports running down the length.
The deck must of been built up & glassed underneath before it was installed as the is no bare ply showing anywhere.
There is foam floatation front & rear with full height bulkhead containing the foam.
The deck is actually self draining although the drain is only a single 25mm pipe, still this is a great asset in my opinion.
I will be fitting the fuel tank under the deck, it will be a sealed deck with through ventilation though.
I just popped out the cool box lid from the mould - looks good.

I have stated putting a few things back together now & also fitted the support for the cool box lid...

Console looks great Mart!!!!!! How many hours have you clocked so far? Are you mounting fish finder / nav in the space on the let or having in top mounted?

I like the idea of having it all mounted into the console itself as it keeps everything tidy but for ease of use top mounted all the way

Yeah not sure yet Scott, I was messing around with the GPS & sounder but, I could not decided how or where to mount them!
I dont want the units to disrupt my view so they have to be mounted on the face of the console but, I am not so keen on flush mounting expensive electronics as someone might nick them - the boat will be kept in the marina & although there is limited security things do go missing!
I also have a smaller sounder that I want to mount at the rear of the boat so we can see it while holding the rods.
Unfortunately I have to work for the rest of the week so not much is going happen on the boat for a few days anyway :vangry

Your boat is looking super!!
I picked up a new oldie myself yesterday, tis in for repairs... it has extensive scraping on its left side a little beyond my skills of matching pigments.

Your inline cool box really has me thinking tho, as I was thinking of fitting underdeck fuel tanks next season and I might just pop in a coolbox!!

What is it Bob, Orkney fastliner?
Very difficult to match UV exposed gel coat but easy to fill & paint the whole topside with two pack poly!

Amazing skills Fox, that boat looks like my perfect spearing vessel! Wish I had that level of technical skills!

What are your plans for it? Will you attempt to sell it on or are you going to break her in yourself?

Not sure yet mate, I have a great little boat already but, I think I will give this one sea trial & see how I feel about her.

Its an Orkney 590tt and replacement of the fastliner. Fine boat.

My last boat I painted as you suggest, but this is better condition so I'd rather get some of the big gel chips repaired, and some of the scratches sanded out.
However I though it was a white boat, but its actually a very pale grey, so we need some pigment that must be ordered. Twill be a few weeks.

You gonna paint yours or keep the orange? Very safe for divers I would imagine

The orange is all new gel mate as is all the white inside but, yes I will be painting the outside with two pack polyurethane.
I used to spray paint the product but now it is just not worth the effort as hand painting give an amazing high gloss smooth finish that is really tough too - great stuff.
The 590 was indeed a definite improvement.
Good luck with the colour match, very tricky once the boat is a few years old!

Looking really good.. and coming along nicely. Similar thoughts have been playing through my mind just the space to work on one thats stopping me at the moment!

International two pack polyurethane.
The product is not that easy to apply as it tacks over very quickly so you cant go back on it even after a couple of minutes.
The recommended method requires two people to apply the paint, one to roll on a thin layer with a 4'' foam roller head while the other persons follows immediately behind with a soft bristle bush to "tip off" the paint.
I managed it on my own but I will get help for a final third coat.
The finish is quite remarkable showing no brush strokes but, gives an amazing reflective shine.

Looking good mate, I've been wondering though, what is the big stainless "roll hoop" at the back for? Must be a good reason for it won't have been cheap for whoever paid for it, but I just can't figure it out.

Good question mate.
The precious owner used it for island hopping & regularly came back in the dark so it was good for nav lights & also gets the VHF aerial up high. (although I have mounted it half way up :head)
From my perspective it makes a perfect rod holder to rest the rods against while traveling.
The hoop as you say is normally termed as a radar arch & they are almost standard fitment on offshore ribs.

It does look good Mart!
Tom its a roll bar hopefully Aluminium not stainless tho. There is a flat plate at the top, centreline which will take a radar and keep it above head-height so Foxy doesnt get zapped.
I think it will have a lovely soft ride, what i am trying to figure is the reason for the wedges fitted on the aft 6" of the chine?
did you run the boat before you started working on it?

Oh right, it just looked a bit substantial just for mounting stuff on! Ain't going to help if you roll it after all eh.

Cheers chaps.
