i use one religiously for shore diving to store abalone and fish as well as keep fish out of the water. i tied a game bag on it so birds dont get to them when i am diving away from the board. great to surf in as well. i dont tow it around, it gets anchored to kelp or with an anchor. i also have clips for the speargun.

I also use a float religiously (although I'm an aetheist!:) ) but I found mine made from a swimming float was big enough. Also important for us over here to be seen by boats, jetskis, windsurfers etc. Details around http://forums.deeperblue.net/trip-reports/64444-guernsey-2006-a-64.html?highlight=float#post609459 . You'll see I've got a clip as well as a weight, so I can either clip it to the back of my belt or leave it anchored to a spot if I want to go through thick weed, etc. Hope this helps.

The boogie board works great for swimming over the top of thick kelp. I hang fish in a mesh sac from the bottom side because seagulls will peck holes in my fish otherwise. The seals don't bother the fish once they are bagged.

We rig one side of our boards with shoulder straps so we can carry our gear down the cliffs. The other side is rigged with bungie cord line or bungie cord cargo net. A lot of guys just poke a hole through the board with a screwdriver and attach cords with heavy zip ties. We have a bodyboard shop locally and I bought 4 more of the plastic threaded mounts used for the standard board leash. I look for the biggest boogie board I can find because the small ones can be a little low on floatation. Also, have used the front quarter of a soft surfboard sawed off, and it is thicker and floats better. There are fiberglass ribs running through the center of these boards which makes them tougher too.

There is not much to making a float like mine, I just cut down an old foam board with a knife.

yeah i think i'm gonna use an old boogie board so as to hold a extra set of goggles and water, and my fish, i'll ad 50 pound test for a float line, pretty good huh? the strap that connects to your hand on a boogie board i will tun to the bottom

the setups is great but use something bigger like poly rope for the line if you cant get a float line. 50 lb test line will come apart should a waave wash the boogie board away. 3/8" poly / truck rope is ok for this and easier to see; ) also easy on the wallet!

thanks i'm gonna use what you said, so is there a way to make it more float sturdy, like making it so it doesn't tip over

Hi

I used washing line as you see because it's strong, tangles less and seems to slip through weed etc better.:)

i think a standard size boogie board is plenty stable. i usually use it when diving for abalone on the north coast and put 3 abalone, 2 guns and some sea urchins as well as use it for my body to surf in on a wave if there are any.

the hard bottom boards are best for this as the others might be more flexible.

if birds come packing on the fish you can flip it over in the water so the fish are below the board, use snap clips to fasten gear and maybe even a mini dive flag so you can see it in swell.

yeah i'm gonna use a boogie board, i'm gonna put a small cooler on the top i'm not in any deep water i'm just gonna use it to hold my fish and other stuffs

Hi

Some people also fix their stringer underneath the float ( or was that what you meant?) but I prefer clipping it around my waist so the fish sit behind me. Don't know where you are or how big the fish are ( we're talking usually 5-6lb bass etc max.) so that may not work for you. Also useful to carry a bottle of water and I think a flag of some sort is good practice.

i think the stringer underneath is a greta idea for places without kelp and fewer sharks. when i leave my catch in the water my friends get a bit uneasy. also the seals get to them as well.

its inevitable, on top the birds come and peck the gills and eyes out and underwater there are sharks / seals and other fish that come and get them.

cant i ever win?: )
