It's embarrassing, but I just can't help it - after years of overuse, I have a very funky booty. :( And the smell is killing all related activities. No one wants ride to the beach in my car because the junk in my trunk reeks of dead skunk.
Even my little daughter held her nose and said "Daddy you booty is stinky!"

So my question to my DB friends is: How do you get the funk outta your trunk, and get your booty unstunk?

The problem started with a slow month at work, combined with good diving conditions, and good surf; all in 100f/38c air temperatures, with the car parked outside. This meant that all of my gear lived (and fermented) in the trunk of my car for nearly a month. I did my best to rinse everything properly after each session, but nothing ever quite dried out. Eventually I popped open the trunk and :hungover :yack. Fortunately, the suits just needed a good washing with some wetsuit wash I got at my local surf shop. The booties were washed three times, but they retained their funk!

They dried out on the patio for almost a week, before I used them yesterday and this morning. And on my way to work this morning, up crept the familiar funky booty scent. I'm beginning to think that the only cure will be a mixture of bleach and incineration.

All that to ask: is there something that will kill the funk / bacteria / mold that has taken over my beloved booties? Or should I call the Hazmat team?

Try Simple Green mate

a strange cat pissed all over my verandah last week and including on my BCD :yack - it cleans just about anything rofl

Stinky Booty? Sounds like my brother rofl

After weekend away dives I rinse my gear in a savlon or dettol mix. Just dump your gear in the tub and pour some savlon over it and run cold water till everything is covered, let it rest for a bit and then rinse with clean water and let it dry. If the booties still smell a bit funky rinse them seperately in a stronger mix, the other solution would be to try and not releive your bladder while wearing booties and suit, water has a tendency to end up there so piss does the same and after a while in the hot hot sun well, lets just say they dont get a nice tan :hungover:yackroflrofl

Lockedin - go to a Outdoors/hunting store and buy some Hunters Body Shampoo/soap - it's uncented and removes smells- I use it on my suits and never have a problem- I use the Green stuff by "hunters specialties" - Just a suggestion.

What you need there mate is a gallon of petrol and a box of matches.:)

My dive buddy had a problem cleaning his wetsuit a while ago and every time we got to a café we always seemed to get to the front of the queue in double quick time.
I think he left it out on his patio for the best part of half the winter trying to let nature sort out the smell before it eventually got burnt.
Just as well as I could have sworn that it had started to evolve.rofl

i had the same problem a few years ago.

i used baking powder and water in the booties, left them to stand for a few days, and hey presto, no smell.

still using the same booties, no problems.

Hey i got a couple of these in a scuba care package over xmas, I can give you some to try out. Its an enzyme that kills the bacteria in wetsuits. Unless thats what you used already.

I don't know how it would work on dive gear, but if you want to deskunk a dog, I've found that Massingill douche powder, double strength, is wonder.

Thanks guys! I settled on Abusingelves' baking powder solution.

Simple Green actually seemed to work the best, but this particular pair are my surfing boots, and the SG seemed to leave a slight residue that resulted is some spectacular wipeouts!rofl

So if you only use your booties for diving, Simple Green is the best (IMHO).

But if you use your booties for surfing, or anywhere that traction is critical, I would recommend the paking powder.

Perhaps this thread should be moved into the tips forum, it appears that I am not the only one who has funky booty issues!:D
