Hi everyone

I have a quick question.

I am a dive instructor and tech diver and have messed about with free diving in the pool and after some dives.
Once on holiday I was messing around in the pool and did a 3.5 minute static. My wife said surely starving your brain of oxygen causes brain damage.

I couldnt answer that. I know the records are over 10 minutes but then surely the repeated starving the brain of oxygen causes damage, does it not? if not how come?

thanks for your help
Gav

You do not starve the brain of oxygene, you starve the body. Blood circulation in the body is limited to the brain-heart-lungs circuit. The brain remains sufficiently oxygenated pretty late into the apnea. When there is not enough oxygen for the brain, you black out.

I read in a freediving article that brain damage doesn't start until 4-8 minutes after blackout. And that's only if you black out.

Hope this helps :)

Yeah under normal conditions about 3 to 4 mins before damage ocurs at normal body temp. But since you allready drained all the avialable oxygen from your blood, say you stay down to 3.5 min, you would have very litle oxygen leftr. if you blacked out, it would be less than 1 min before damage would begin to ocur IMO
