I've known about Spearfishing for a long time but I've never bothered to look into it, I'm rather intrigued now and would like to know a few things. Excuse me if this is in the wrong board.

It's coming onto Summer here in Australia and I don't expect to start for a while but I live in Sydney, NSW. Would I even want to go fishing around here? I don't expect I would do it constantly so I could take trips further down the state but not out of it.

I have no breathing or diving training besides the basic stuff they teach you in school though I am a fairly competant swimmer. Where would I go to get additional training for diving and such and would I start off spearing with an oxygen tank or just freediving.

One of my main restrictions is Australia's crazy laws (though these mostly apply to media) and my age. Would it be ok to be diving at the age of 13? I'm thinking it could be a problem with developing lungs and more minor things like buying a new suit after it becomes too tight. I have asthma but it's not very major though it limits me from swimming long distances quickly. I plan to start in shallow water, obviously and move down to deeper diving.

Now upon that, is it legal to have a speargun and go spearfishing in Australia. If it isn't it's more of a matter of attaining a spear gun than legal issues.

More questions after those last two questions are answered, no flaming please. Thankyou.

Ok I'm going to ask around at some fish clubs, will not check back on this thread after a week if no one replies.

Good on you to hear the call of the Ocean
But I've got to tell you this:
Nobody on this board will ever encourage a totally unexperienced 13 years old to go off at sea diving alone. :naughty

Good idea to approach some local spearfishing club. I'm not Australian and have no clue about the Sydney spearfishing scene, but if I were in your shoes (oops, in your fins) I'd give first a look into here: [ame=http://www.google.it/search?hl=it&source=hp&fkt=921&fsdt=9793&q=spearfishing+club+sydney&meta=&aq=f&oq=&aqi=]spearfishing club sydney - Cerca con Google[/ame] and join one of them in real life.
