Im new to freediving, obviously. I was looking for a new hobby on account of an injury and thought I found my new love in Freediving... until I got to the pool to practice. I'd been practicing at home while healing up from my injury and was doing well (3:45 personal best). Ive been trying it at the pool the last few days and can hardly make it 30 seconds... I hope one of you OGs can tell my why!!

Thanks,

nelz

Being face down in water is a whole lot of new sensations for the body to deal with. You're used to dry statics in the comfort of your bed/mat or wherever you do your breath holds. Try and get into the same routine all the time before a static. Lie in the same place by the pool, wear the same wetsuit, lie in the same corner of the pool, use the same warm up etc. I have found that helps me. My body knows what to expect and it's a much smoother, more relaxed breath hold. Statics can be a big head game and the more you get used to a certain routine the more relaxed you'll be and your numbers will climb, but focus on the sensations first, don't be aiming for your pb straight off in the water. Build it up slowly and give yourself confidence. Come up shaky and your body will only condition itself to come up when it wants you to breath. Trust me! Take it slow and make sure you always have a buddy to watch you for safety, and it helps to have a coach to talk you through the tougher days. Good luck!
