Hi,

I've done some scuba and a little free diving but I'm new to spearfishing in the UK. So I've got the gun and float etc but was hoping to use my scuba fins...which are bright yellow. Do I stand a chance or will this lack of camouflage lead to much laughter from the fish and an empty stringer?

Got my wetsuit a few weeks before realising that spearfishing suits are differenrt too :head

Colour aside, generally speaking scuba fins are designed for scuba diving which doesn't require the same movement and potential rapid deployment. When spearfishing (freediving) you might have both hands full, literally, and the longer blades (on freediving fins) will add the power missing from any arm assistance. If you are diving to any significant depth then you need to get up and down as quickly as possible whilst freediving so again the longer blade helps. If you are planning on diving in very shallow water then you won't notice this so much. Bright colours might give you away but i'm not sure how much of this is fantasy or truth? Some inquisitive fish are drawn in to the unknown but if you look at all commercially available spearo fins they are dark or cammo so who knows?? :)

First question are they full foot fins or strapped ? (Do you have to tighten a strap at the back?) As that alone means you loose a lot of power. You can pick up freediving fins pretty cheap second hand on eBay. With regard to colour good question, if you are lying in some weed they should be sufficiently covered, and I have found fish are not as bothered by colour than the glass in your mask (they really don't like you looking straight at them)
With regards to the wetsuit I have been using a 5mm surf suit (all black) for 3 yrs now and catch the same sort of amount as my mate in his full camo suit. So how much of a difference it makes hard to say. I try to make sure I'm reasonably well hidden whereas maybe with a camo suit then you don't have to hide quite as well.
warmth wise I'm fine in a 5mm but if I'm diving for a long time or its cold I have 2mm shorts and top I pit on underneath that make an appreciable difference.

Cheers guys.

It sounds like the longer full foot fins will need to be my next purchase (yep, I have to tighten the strap). I made the classic mistake with my suit (and weightbelt) of buying before doing the full research (not like me).

I'll start saving and give it my best shot in the meantime!
