browning(?) a RA springsteel shaft?

Hi there,

anyone an idea how to permanently get rid of the rust on a RA shaft? It hasn't seen a lot of use so I don't want to go for a new one. Has anyone tried browning?
I bought some rustconverter too but I'm not too sure if this is a good idea.
Powder coating on the cheap maybe?

I'm surprised by the rusting. My oldest RA shaft is 13 years old now, and has been used daily for up to 2 weeks without rinsing during winter trips to Hawaii.
The shaft is coated with zinc, which very slowly oxidizes. It should be left alone, since the metal underneath it is not stainless.
The RA shafts are a better quality of spring steel than the 17-4 stainless ones, so better to keep it and use it as is.

I've heard about a botched batch of RA shafts… I've got it from new from someone who bought it as spare but never needed it (or so he said). I live pretty close to the beach so pretty much anything metal starts to rust eventually. But this fella seems to rust only on it's "exposed" side. I've no idea where this comes from – Not overly dramatic is suppose. It still kills fish.

No bending in it, right?
If not, I'd give up on it's pretty looks and just use it.
The only downside might be a taste of rust on the flesh around the hole if it gets really bad. At that point, e-mail Rob directly and ask what's up. He has always responded to my comments and questions

Re: browning(?) a RA springsteel shaft?

sounds like a plan, I will send an email. It's not bend - in fact it has been only on three trips so far (and got my PB snapper so that's a plus). Really don't know how this happened, I take quite good care of my gear.
