The first time i saw him, he swam right up face to face-- i thought i turned my camera on, but the ON button it didn't take...He stayed there through the night and for the next day. I took this video the day after that first meeting.

These individuals must be siblings because of their similar size... I find it fascinating that they can manage to stay together 24/7 for years--at night, in zero vis, they always end up back together. This time it was under a kelp paddy btwn Catalina and SCI. It was huge i dropped my anchor into it and rode the wind and seas all afternoon..

I've had some bad experiences with those molas. Some times they lay on their sides right under the surface so as to maximize the chance of doing prop damage. If the sun is at the wrong angle, you just can't see them. I've seen quite a few with scars and missing eyes, so some of them survive the experience better than the props.

Skip Hellen? I've met him, but haven't seen him in a few years.

he somehow dropped away... haven't heard from him in a couple of years..

About the sunfish--it is their world in which the propeller does so much more than monetary damage...

Have a great day.

Believe me, I don't want to hit them.

I know... It is their nature to lay on the surface, it makes them vulnerable to boat strikes.. I saw an albino Mola once back in the late 80's.. Off the east end of Catalina, probably 6-7 feet across.

This is great! I wish I had an experience like that..
