buying mask from e-shop - good or bad idea?

What if it doesn't fit well?

Baaaad idea. The most important thing about your mask is fit - and if it doesn't fit, it will completely ruin your diving experience.

If you totally want to buy online (it might be cheaper or whatever), then my advice is to visit a dive shop that's nearest to you and try on the available masks. After you've found one that fits your face perfectly, order it from internet.

Trust me, getting a mask that just 'looks cool' is a waste of money. ;)

Thank you Sander,

you simply aprooved my thoughts ...

it's also nice to see freedivers from the Baltic countries..:)

I haven't been on here in quite some time and I apologize in advance for ranting-
But I think this is so wrong. You're taking advantage of the high overhead of the brick-and-mortar dive shop by trying on the mask- but not offering anything in return.

I buy a lot of stuff online. Anything that requires fit though I either buy in a store or order multiple items online at once and return all but the best fit. Certainly once I find something that fits (Doc Martin size 8, Nike size 9, Sphera mask...), I'll order online next time. I think this is fair to everyone.

No apologies needed, we all have our own opinion. :)

You go to the dive shop and try a mask on that fits you, but then you discover that it's too pricy for you. Later, you find the same mask in an e-store with a price tag half as high as in the dive shop. Should you feel guilty if you buy the mask online then? Maybe I'm a bad person, but I wouldn't - even if I'd try on the masks with a purpose to get one later from the net.

But I respect your opinion and I'm glad that there are still so honest people left the world.

Sander-
I'll split hairs even more.
I think your first scenario is reasonable while your second isn't. In the first case you tried it out, honestly decided it wasn't worth the price. Only later did you find the same product online and choose to buy it.

In the second case you had already priced it online. Upon seeing it in the shop with a much higher price you had clearly decided to not buy it there, instead get it online.

I have frustrated my wife no end in this regard. I won't ask to handle or try out an electronic or photo item in a shop unless I plan to buy it there. I spent an extra $100 to buy a camera locally because I couldn't decide between two models after shopping online. After checking both out in the shop my own moral compass said I had to buy it there.

I will comparison shop- but I won't pump a full service store for all the available info and then price shop elsewhere. Now if the so-called full service store is a bunch of rude morons I don't feel any obligation to them.

So there's my hedged personal shopping philosophy.

I work that way, too.
I try to get information and service in the local store. If I do get that there, then I'm willing to pay more for my goods. I find that service and good advice is woth an extra buck.
What I don't feel bad about is trying things in non-service stores. I germany an example would be Media Markt™, (comparable to RadioShack™, afaik) a large chain of somewhat overpriced stores with (mostly) severly incompetent personel. I have no bad feelings about going there to see/feel the items of choice and then buying online. - Mostly, though - when shopping for something I have no expertise in - I do buy at a specialized store where people can actually help me make the right choice. And the price difference has mostly proven worth it.

Another two cents for this one :D

Well if you don't have the money then getting it on-line is the way to go. But by not supporting local stores you will end up buying every thing on line because the small local stores will run out of business. I know there is many different diving stores around me but i haven't spend money on them because they have low stock and the sales or not really selling but just killing their time in the store.

Just buy the item where its cheaper. Its not your job to keep a store open. That is managements job and as a consumer you try to get the best deal. I paid 54 dollars for a scubapro snorkel the other day in the store. I had to buy it because i was going diving. I bought an extra one on leisure pro it was HALF the price shipped. Shops to me are there just for the convenience. You would be crazy to not buy from online shops when the price differs so much.

My experience is, that if you tell your local dive shop that you can get the same thing cheaper by buying online, your dive shop will usually make you a better price.

Perhaps not so low as the online shop, but worth to think about to buy it local. And if you buy local you will get much more service in cases where your gear is broken or if you need some spare parts.
