Scuba diving, but not freediving. The depths would have been perfect for freediving- all less than 50'. THere were finger reefs that went out from shore and you could dive inbetween them. There was even real coral, which is rare for the part of the Pacific.

Thanks Jon, appreciate the reply. Heading down there March 3-7, and I'll be sure to post a dive report, hopefully with some pics.

I was there in late November 1997. At that time much of the reef areas in the area were "protected" and spearfishing was not allowed. I managed to hook - up with an American expat living on the beach who worked part-time with a panga fisherman. They took me out and kept an eye on me while they fished. I would go back in a heartbeat even though I didn't pull the trigger once. The area where we were was a little deep for me - the top of the reef was around 50 ft and of course the caves with pargo, snapper and groupers were deeper. I had one opportunity on a pargo, but I didn't think that I would be able to retreive it if it got into a cave farther down. I think that the pelagics are around in the early spring. Good luck to you and let us know how your trip goes - OK? - CJ

You may want to get a Sport Fishing Permit (permiso de pesca deportiva) just for the week or for the days you need it, at the local Oficina de Pesca .

It's not expensive. And please, don't spear over protected places. There are many places where is permited.
