Has anyone heard of the new EU fishing regulations to be executive from June 1st (the incoming week)?

It's practically the end (the end) of commercial trawling for cuttlefish, small squids, razorshell, wedge shell and other species.

This new EU regulation implies greater distance from shore for harvesting and wider nets, which will practically reduce the harvest of those species to nearly zero.

Though I've always hated commercial trawling, I know I'm gonna miss my calamaretti fritti.....

Given the appalling state of most fisheries this comes as no surprise and trawling generally is the most destructive form of commercial fishing. I hope we haven't left it too late to let so many species have a chance to recover. I have just finished reading the following book which I highly recommend to anyone interested in the state of commercial fisheries;

[ame=http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cod-Biography-Fish-Changed-World/dp/0099268701]Cod: A Biography of the Fish That Changed the World: Amazon.co.uk: Mark Kurlansky: Books[/ame]

I hope the same doesn't happen with other species as we haven't seemed to learn from what happened with cod!!

Do you know what the rationale was for the law change, Spaghetti? Are they trying to reduce pressure on cuttlefish, squid etc - or was the inshore fishing hurting other fish populations through bycatch?
