hello,
currently im building my first speargun european style out of teak wood and i was wondering if i choosed the right shaft...
somewhere on the internet i read that you calculate the legth of your speargun by measuring from the second notch of the shaft to the point where the bands are attached. then you add 40cm and you have the length of yout shaft.
but now i have glued my teak planks together and they are approx 138cm long but it seems waaaay too long because if i place the trigger and the shaft at the right spot (about 15cm from the edge) the shaft is only a little longer than the gun itself...

looking forward to your answers

greez felix

Shaft overhang is a personal preference. Some like a lot, some like a little. I like about 12 to 14 inches on my big guns. Put your trigger where you want it, then measure from the trigger to get the length of a shaft that will give you the overhang that you prefer.

thank you for your answer!
so do you think that about 6 inches are enough?
i know that you would prefer a longer shaft but would this be ok because i already bought the shaft and i dont want to waste too much wood...

I'm sure it would be just fine. As I said, preferences vary widely, and 6 inches would be well within the normal range of acceptability. And shorter shafts are lighter, so they cause less recoil.

I built my rollergun and used a short shaft. Im incredibly happy with it. as the guy above said, it comes down to preference.
