So in addition to the built in shark protection of another thread, which would be really cool, do any companies make a freediving suit that is white on the bottom (stomach surface) and camo'd (mottled) on the back? Seems like this would help somewhat with the spearing camo and maybe with self-assurances regarding sharks. Maybe a glow stick type thing on the chest and thighs to really light up. Any opinions?

The only suit that I can personally promise will not get you bit is my Armani in the closet that will never get salt water on it. :hmm

And on making yourself a better looking fish with the white undersides and darker topsides and all... making yourself a better looking morsal on the foodchain is not the goal. Breaking up the larger consistant blocks is what will get you closer to the prey, that is if you have all your other stuff taken care of.

Thanks icarus. I have a few suits in the closet too.... Where in No Cal are you? My wife and I learned to dive on Sonoma and Mendocino coasts. I am down in the Morro Bay region now. I just cannot get away from the big predators:)

I'm up in Northern Sonoma County and hit Mendo and Humboldt counties with disturbing frequency. Having been able to pretty much dive everywhere over the years, right here is just smooth.

Foxfish has a good story about an all silver camo outfit he tried. Check out the original Guernsey thread.

The thought of a lighter underside occured to me too, having noticed some W. coast USA spearos (& Omer) often colour the bottom of their floats white. The same camo technique used by many fish - light or shiney lower half & darker top. I tried camo'ing an old pair of fins white on the tops (as seen standing) & green/brown/... on the sole. As far as I can tell, it worked ok ... certainly had fish coming in close (one gar circled me 2 or 3 times, probably thinking "what the heck is that?!").

Another idea to occur to me, although I have never tried it, is to use a cheap camo vest or T-shirt over a non-camo wetsuit. Lycra or polyster would be best but all the camo I have seen is cotton (or expensive boutique stuff). You don't need full coverage. As mentioned above, you just need to break up your shape a bit (to look less seal like perhaps?), so perhaps a vest that is just a different colour to your suit would work. Have seen some pictures of Miles in a Predator wetsuit that is made up of big blocks of light blue & black ... it doesn't look camo - but it breaks up the divers outline/shape.
