Hey guys,

just a query have any of you guys suffered a migraine during or after going freediving?!?!? i dont get them all the time but i sometimes get them after freediving. Not really sure if freediving is the cause or not because most times i go months without getting a migraine but just in the last couple of weeks i have had three. There getting to the stage where im needing to go to hospital and put on a drip injected with strong pain killers. Usually the warning signs are that my vision develops sun spots as if you had been looking at the sun for ages, then my vision clears up after an hour and then the pain hits. Just curious if any of you guys have suffered from them and what you do to stop them from hitting.

Cheers

Plain headaches are caused by excess CO2, but usually they are not much worse than a hangover. Strong migraines may be perhaps triggered by apnea too - finally migraines are still not perfectly understood, but if you have genetic predisposition for migraines, some triggers are certainly present at apnea - important migraine triggers are chemical changes in brain (present in apnea), blood pressure changes (present), trigeminal nerve stimulation (present), humidity (present), dehydration (may be easily present too), strong light changes (present on surfacing), sexual activity (well, you should stop with that during your training!), etc. Just look up migraine in Google and you'll get plenty of info.

Also PFO can be an important factor for triggering migraines - if they did not check you for it in the hospital, you may ask your physician to do it.

So check out some documents about migraines on the web, and try limiting the triggers you can (hydrate well, stop with sex underwater, etc)

Migraine is a generalized response to a wide assortment of triggers, every sufferer has his own set of triggers, some common (msg, bright light) some uncommon. I've been fighting mine for 20 years with some success. Freediving doesn't seem to be a trigger for me, although, if I have one coming on, the excess co2 can aggravate the migraine. Sometimes, if it is early stage, freediving helps, long slow breathing, relaxation, etc.

Don't know if this stuff will work for you, yours are worse than mine and less frequent, but here is what worked for me. Finding the triggers, msg, yellow #5, various unidentified food preservatives, suspect other food colors. Just changing diet helped a lot. Hard exercise keeps them down. Imitrex (migraine drug) works great, but only treats the symptoms , not the cause, and is extremely expensive. Finally I discovered a neuromuscular therapist (fancy kind of massage) who is magic and truly saved my life. He ain't cheap either, but worth every dime. Recently I've stumbled onto a stretching routine that seems to have beaten them entirely. Too early to tell for sure, but it looks good.

Good luck with them.

Aspartane for is an automatic trigger wacth out for this ;)

Recently a CO2 headache just lead to an migrane :S food for the though any expert on the matter?

Neck streching on daily basis may help. I got migrains because of my neck salts and when I'm doing routine streches I'm ok.

Last year I went to hospital and made full exams including head and body magnetic scan. I couldnt walked well by migrains and I was felt for almost a month like slightly drunked on daily basis... First they thought I have a small celebral attack. After scans, they found me much salt in neck area.

After started streching and pranayamas everything disappeared.
