Can hand spears be used for coral trout? (3kg or higher)

I no that they are generally used for crayfish but im wondering what else they can be used for ?

Yep! can be used for almost anyfish, just depends on your skill level and the quality of the hand spear, just ask some of the guys from the Bahamas who use them for Wahoo and Jobfish etc. (spearguns arent legal there).

just mak sure you get close, also if chasing bigger prey set yourself up with a float and some line just in case the fish swims away with your spear.

Ok thanks im new to the whole thing.

People say that they prefere fibreglass spears instead of alluminium because fibreglass is heavier, therefore hits harder because it's got more weight behind it ?

I have alluminium, would it still be used for trout ?

fibre glass does carry more weight which will improve penetration but also it is designed to flex more so that a fish will not be able to bend the spear. however a good quality alunminiumspear will take trout without a problem just make sure if you can to hit them good and as close to the head as possible as this will disable them instantly reducing the chances of a lost fish or bent spear.

have fun and when your ready to upgrade to a gun or need any other equipment or advise go and have a talk to Aaron at SPEAR AND DIVE he is the man in cairns to talk to, alturnatively you can join the Cairns spearfishing club there are alot of guys there that are willing to help you.
