Just a quick note to let everyone know that Canada Day (Canada's Birthday) is July 1st, less than a week after the Nationals. If you plan to stick around for Canada Day you'll be treated to one hell of a fun party.

Downtown Ottawa on Canada Day is typically filled with tens of thousand's of people partying in the streets. It's an experience you'll never forget.

Our Eastern Regional Championships were held this past weekend and results can be found at www.freedivecanada.com

The Nationals are quickly approaching and it is shaping up to be another great competition. Keep posted for updates.

did you guys use the new rules? any comments?

Although I wasn't there, I understand that the rules were a hybrid, namely, the new rules + the old LMC rule at the same time.

Eric is correct, we did use the new AIDA rules in their entirety but we still recognize the previous rule on disqualifying performances due to LMC. This was our first competition using the new rules and overall, things went quite well. Fortunately for us judges, the performances at Nationals were either obviously clean with good compliance to the surfacing protocol or clear blackouts requiring assistance from the safety divers.

CAFA will be monitoring the effectiveness of the new surfacing protocol very closely over the coming year, keeping statistics on false positives and false negatives with respect to the old LMC rule and the new protocol. We'll make a report when we have some more statistically relevant results, but based on the 40 performances at Nationals, so far, so good.

All results are now posted on the freedivecanada site at http://www.freedivecanada.com/cgi-bin/comp_result.pl?event_id=49

I have to say that the folks in Ottawa put on an excellent competition. Jason Billows and his crew did an excellent job at making the first Canadian Nationals outside of Vancouver a big success.

It looks like Canadian freedivers will have to get used to crossing to the other side of the country every second year. :)

CAFA President, Webmaster and Judge at Nationals

Very intresting Tom - your plans of FIRST monitoring the SP and then deciding.
Thats what I suggested once in the assembly - to first "explore" every significant new rule before altering the rules for a whole community.

We are doing something similar in Sweden.

I understand you expect athletes to prove themselves in a yearly national competition in order to qualify for world cups. In Sweden we accept results from almost any competition - we also stage two extra comps in order to give athletes many chances to prove themselves.

We have also decided to have the ambition to organize no less than 7 nationals every year. One for each discipline and one in the classic combination. Doesnt necessarily have to be 7 comps. One indood comp can contain the pool disciplines.

How do you do in other countries?
