To the Western Cape divers spearo's out there...

I'm returning to the Cape after a few years in the UK, and want to bring back an Omer open-cell suit with me. Previously I only kreef-dived, using my 5mm surfing suit, so am unfamiliar with open-cell suits.

Regarding the Omer Med Mimetic, I've got 2 options: 5mm and 6.5mm. I'll be diving both False bay side and up the west coast, so which would of the two is best? Would the 6.5 be too hot if I was to head off to Hermanus or the Knysna for a trip?

Help would be greatly appreciated...

Luke

Hi Luke.
Most people around here use a 5mm opencell for both sides. In Knysna and areas like that, even Falsebay at times I find my 5mm too warm and have now also ordered a 3mm suit. So id suggest get a 5mm and work it from there, you could allways have a new suit made up here when you find the 5mm too harsh. Our suits that come in the picasso green and black camo go for about R2200 up when bought at Rabitech.
When your in the area give us a buzz if you need a buddy or two, diving has been fun lately as were able to get in the water almost every weekend now :D
O and while your at it get a Shark Sheild if you plan on diving Falsebay and Knysna regularly, theyre about R3500 here for the freedom 4

Definitely the 5mm option, Luke - especially if you want movement for kreef diving. And like DT says, sometimes even a 5mm is even too much. I regularly dive the Atlantic with 5mm long john, and 3mm jacket. And if you head up to Knysna etc, you'll definitely use only the 5mm and probably want 3mm for some of the time.

Thanks okes, 5mm it is then. Got a few bucks to burn, so looking at either the Omer or Picasso suits. Afraid for a while there i'll be 'all the gear but no idea'.

DT, thanks for the offer, will be a rank beginner when it comes to the spearing side of things though, so you might have your hands full. Will probably get a flat around Strand/Somerset West, but would mission quite regularly to the Atlantic side. My gran also stays up by Paternoster, so would cruise up there from time to time.

Hey Luke.
Well to be frank I for one have no problem with beginners, neither do most of the people I know. Wed be more than happy for another buddy in the group, the more the merrier I always say...
And seeing that youre gonna be stying close to the water itll allways be handy to have you around, with the possibility of viz reports and all that rofl
When will you be here?

Hey man, nice to have another spearo in the 'crew'! another option for you would be to get the wetsuit here rather, u can go to rabitech or even coral (who make the rabitech suits) and get a custom suit made...it'll cost you R1750 and u will never look back!
how about u bring some hob nobs, pot noodles and a couple of photos of the England supporters faces after the big game with when u come down?! hehe only joking...although pot noodles sound good!
keep well!

:crutchWatched the game with my Saffa buddies in an English pub, never seen such glum faces as those pom supporters in my life! If only I'd had a camera...

I'm hoping to be back in the first quarter of next year, so still a while yet. It's weird how being away for a few years focusses you in on just a few things about home that one misses. In my case, getting back in the water!

I'll give the Rabitech suits some thought. They open-cell?

What about spearguns? Got an old Rob Allen 1.1m railgun that I used a bit when I lived in Natal, is that ok for Cape fishing?

Hey man, yea the rabi suits made by coral is opencell. The prices have gone up though so itll cost you about 2000 to 2500 depending on what size you go for, meaning if your chest measurement is above 80cm you pay more...
A 1.1RA is perfect for our type of fishing. Ive used a 1.1 Apex for two years now and its my main gun, allthough I do have a 750 also that I rarely use. On a side note if you plan on going after tuna and such then youll need a bigger better setup, but like you said your fairly new to the whole thing so Id stick to my 1.1 as you can use it for most anything from Yellowtail hunting at dassen to reef hunting in struis and shore hunting in all areas...
