Cape Town South Africa

It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
It may be worth your while investing in a fishing ski, it offers both storage and shelter when the taxman cometh... and you can kepp the curry sarmies dry

And you can use it to support you on your way back to shore should you find yourself a little tired at the end of your dive...

I had a quick dive yesterday on Long Beach in Simons Town on my way back from a meeting. The water was dead flat and viz was good. I was out with only fins and a mask and with a bit of self deceit it started to feel a bit like Thailand. I checked out the boat wreck that's about 20-30 meters from the shore following the pipeline. I've seen scubas out there before so figured it was worth a look.

Anyway, I had fun and was wondering if there are any other spots around Cape Town that have calm water and stuff to see at around 5 to 15 meters?

It is a nice place to snorkel ey. Some friends of mine (not proper divers just snorkelers) always rave about venus pools in cape point. Also diving the outer edge of the kelp along the catwalk in fish hoek is quite nice, usually quite clear and very flat, the only concern there is the GW's. Then windmill beach is always flat and if you get behind the big boulder (aka shark rock) it get much deeper, although i hav'nt dived there since i first learned to snorkel. So its probally alot tamer than i remember (i was really freaked out over shark rock). We actually saw a hammerhead on that dive

Hey John i'm probally gonna do a kreef dive a saturday, are you keen? Either soetwater or we could try the reserve or that spot on wireless road in kommetjie.

Oh here's some information on the cape town wild card. It costs R45. You can buy it from these places. https://www.wildinafrica.com/endless/Wild?menuAction=Page&pageName=ct_info

Sounds, great! the big bugs are all up the west coast, i'm not very experienced with west coast spots, but i'm sure there are some other capies here that know the spots. I'm always up for exploreing. Aparently up there you can't really go wrong, alot of guys don't even suit fully cos they have their full quota before they even get deeper that their waist.

I really like the idea of a fishing yak, the only problem is it doesn't work when u diving with a buddy, unless of course he also has one. And I don't usually dive alone. Actually i never do. It would be a bit expensive to buy 2.What i was thinking might be a cheaper way is to have 2 or three el cheapo paddleskis rigged out for spearfishing. I could make fish boxes, gun holders, nets, clips etc. Just trying to find some old skis for under R200..... sigh,....waiting, searching classifieds etc

Thanks for the link Lenny! The reserve sounds good to me. I've got some stuff to do tomorrow morning (like get a wild card), but I think I can fit in a late morning/early afternoon dive. I'll give you a call tomorrow.

Been diving quite a bit around the Atlantic side as well (much closer to home for me) have had a couple of really nice dives, always looking for a buddy so let me know if anybody's going to be around and up for a dive. Lenster how the little ones coming along?

They doing well, both healthy strong and keeping me awake!:rcard

Hey Reece don't you want to join us on Saturday? never dived on the atlantic side of the reserve before, i think it will be good tho

hehehe, nice!

Have to say I'm very tempted, sea looks like its going to be very flat with almost no wind tomorrow- I might have another dive on with some friends but if that doesnt work out I wouldnt mind popping down south to hook up with you guys. What time you thinking of heading through?

We just kreefed, the water was incredibly flat on both sides of the penisula, although when we got in at Millers the viz was disapointing. By the way Millers has zero crayfish, but i did catch an octopus. Anybody know how to cook them? Are they any good for eating?

Also people always told me that all you have to do is turn it inside out. That is way easier said than done! couldnt get it right. Anyways when we saw that we where attracting a small crowd on facinated people, we decided it probally would be best not to kill it in front of the kidsrofl .

Also the reserve wanted to charge us R85 pp on top of the already exorbitant entrance fee to go crayfishing. Are freaken mad the head!:rcard:rcard:rcard:rcard Next time i'm just going in and i'm not telling them what i'm going to do.

Anyways eventually we took out some kreef at soetwater, struggled a bit but at least we got really nice sizes

Jeremy Williams (from Rob Allen) loves catching and eating octopus. He tells some of the funniest stories about catching the sticky buggers.
He also has some really good advice on cooking (and killing) them. I'll get him to recount his stories for me and post it here...

sup guys!!!!!! been super busy trying to find ways to get onto the offshore rigs. (proving to be a nightmare!!!)
anyway....atlantic side of the reserve is millions better than false bay side....try out neptunes dairy...(last right before the big circle in the reserve...then keep following the road) lots of kreef (if we only have 5 mins to dive i.e. had kak dives and its 15.55pm ....we will go to neptunes and within 5 mins you will have your kreef) lots of hotties, galjoen, swim to the back of the kelp (lank far) and ull prolly get geelbek etc. definately my favorite dive spot in Cape Town by far!
caught a 4 kg octopus there once....punch it afew times..turn its head inside out....and the bugger will still get out...so you gotta take a plastic packet with you to tie them up in....also they have 3 hearts...2 for the gills and 1 for the body, so cut its head off and the body still runs away....crazy lil buggers.
cheers

Did you pay R85 for a reserve kreef licence? + R25 for a reserve fishing licence?

Bunch of greedy idiots the parks board!

i usually jst go there and pay entrance fee and i say 1 adult to fish. if they wanna follow me they can.....sometimes i just pay entrance fee, theyve stopped me before but all they make u do is pay at the gate...so everytime they dont catch you, you can get away with it....
