yeah...I admit i know very little about the subject, but I can't see how an inquisitive predator that hunts using (amongst others things) detection of electrical fields is *not* going to want to investigate a strange electrical pulse that it detects from (i assume) a great distance? Maybe even putting it into a "hunting" mode?

I've been wondering whether diving without a shield amongst buddies who are wearing them is not a very hazardous exercise...

Hi everyone,

I'm off to Cape Town for a few weeks from the 22nd of September 2009 as part of my degree and I really want to get some freediving done in the first week. Would anyone be up for showing me around a little?

Okay, so thinking of shooting a hotty or two this weekend. In the past, I haven't really enjoyed eating them - but I think I've been cooking them not too good. Anyone know any cool ways to cook them? Also, has anyone eaten jut jaws? Apparently they're nice. Thinking of nice fish to eating that can be shot on the atlantic seaboard??

Hey NewWave check what Gletwyn has to say about them on his blog

Gletwyn Rubidge 's Spearfishing and Freediving: My speargun takes a milkie (jutjaw)

Have you seen them on the Atlantic Seaboard???

Hi Alix

Drop us a line closer to the time - me and some other guys are in the water at least a few times a week for training or just for fun around the a. seaboard area

Hahaha! Yeah and what happens when two guys wearing shields get close to one another!?!? Kind of like in Ghostbusters when they cross their beams?

Personally i don't like fresh hottie either. They are kinda mushy and never really firm up when you cook them. They also retain that very strong kelpy/raw fishy taste. I freeze mine and then it tastes a lot better. I know it sounds weird, but i can't really get used to that taste. Also I usually fillet them and dust them in spiced self-raising flour, and the fry them. I have also been told that hottie is great over the coals.

Shot guys - yeah tried some the other night again. Coated them in egg, then dusted them with flower and fried them in olive oil. Was actually pretty decent, but defintiely not up there with 'tail or dorado.

RBotes yeah seen a few small jut jaws around atlantic side.

Anyone getting wet this weekend? Surfing buddies are all telling me the swell is gna be great for surfing on sunday....(galjoen season opens this sunday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) was keen for a dive...but dont have any viz reports..so if any of ya have any info would be shweet if you could share. shot!

Was'nt hunlee gonna get you one?

There's a guy in the Bellville underwater club called Nick, he stays in Edgemead (I lost his number), he used to sell SA freedivers gear. But He still makes inflateable floats for them out rubberduck material. He could probally make you one.

What's it for? Rope?

looks pretty cool - car inner tube covered in canvas / non-absorbant synthetic? Know a place where we had some foam blocks covered in vinyl - I'm sure they'll be able to do the stitching for something like this if your keen

Yes, please! Do you have a number for them?

Lenny: Hanli is in Dahab, so I need to source one myself. Yep, it carries rope attached to a weight belt. You drop the line down wherever you want to dive.

How does the rope go through the bottom without it filling with water? (just remember that if it goes over the side, it will just take a little swell or a tug on the rope to flip the float over) Here's my idea: (its the dodgy paint picture)

I want to change the design of my float a bit. I really wish i could find something slightly sturdier/stronger than that basin. Something that will handle more of a beating. I want to be able to smash it against the rocks and still have all my goodies safely stowed away.

Here is a pic of another one from below: buoy

It's pretty much just a strap down the middle with a bit of open strap to clip the rope on. These types of buoys usually get a bit of water in them (especially when people lie on them in the water), so they aren't ideal for keeping stuff dry. They will however keep stuff out of the water.
