I am looking into buying Captain Nemo Powerfins for deepish freediving. They seem to have a good blade, are durable and not too expensive. I used to dive with a Mono fin, but my back can't take it any more. I like soft fins, but want them to be able to carry me up from 50+ in a 7 mm suit and 5 kg weight.

What are your experience with these fins for deeper diving and what kind of stiffness do you recommend?

I used the yellow waterways stiffness 2 & 4 for years and found them to have good propulstion. They are well made and coped with bangs and use well. I'm using c4 81s now and find that I have to kick wider and slower with them. I wish I kept my wws.

Thanks for your reply, Watts. Does this imply that you consider the WWs to be more efficient, and thus energy saving, or that they just fit better to your preference of swimming style?

Is stiffness 2 enough for a small guy (72 kg) doing reasonably deep dives, you recon?

I am 6', 220lb, 12EEE shoe size. The Captain Nemo footpocket was too tight on the top bridge of my foot. I ended up giving the footpockets away. I put the blades in Picasso FP. I got #3 and they are pretty stiff for shore diving. I am neutral at 30' for working at 25-40'. I rarely go to 50'. They are straight blades and not as nice as my Picasso angled Carbon for surface swims.

If I had to do it over again. I would go out and get fitted for the most comfortable FP first with a 4mm neoprene sock then get an angled blade since I mainly surface swim. I have the stiffest Picasso Carbons and they are not as stiff as the #3 fiberglass. There is no comparison for surface swimming between the straight blade fiberglass and the angled carbon. The angled blade is more efficient.

I guess I like the stiffer fiberglass blade for freediving. I may have more control with them when maneuvering underwater.

I would look for other fiberglass blades that are angled.

My #3 WW straight blade fiberglass blades in Picasso FP are not more efficient and definitively not more energy saving. They are good for rough rocky entries and maneuvering around rocks when hunting.

True the angled blade is better for surface swimming but it depends on ankle flexability.
I used the blades in omer footpockets which were great. They were good for 58m for me back in 05.
