Car Keys

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
where i dive there must be about a billion pieces of slate lying around. i just pick one and hide my key under it ... one of these days i'm going to forget where i put it....

We do the same here, there's lots of rocks and holes we hide the keys. If I am in a public place I have a small waterproof pouch I put them in and usually hang it on the float. Once I forgot I had them in my swimsuit pocket and spent some time in the water with them. They are now rated to 13 meters, :) which is good because I was in a remote place and the key has a chip to unlock the motor.

My car has a push button start but a small back up key so i keep it in my left glove.Kept against my palm it's pretty comfortable.

I just make a shoestring necklace
and it goes on under the vest.
i have i waterproof pouch but havent tryed it yet

I use waterproof bag as a float.. it holds my wallet keys and phone when I go alone or if everyone goes in at once..

I had a water key made up that I put round my neck on a string. It will open the doors but won't start the engine. I hide the proper key which is chipped and has a plipper inside the car - I goes deep behind a bit of trim and with the boot shut would be extremely difficult to access even if someone smashed a window and knew where to look. (hopefully not famous last words!) So I put the key round my neck - plip - and slam the boot but If I forgot to put the key round my neck I would be buggered! Round here you can't hide your keys on the car as thieving scrot bags hide near the beach car parks and watch out specifically for people hiding thier keys :vangry They target surfers mainly and I've had two freinds who've had brand new company cars stolen this way - imagine the phone call to the boss.... The worst cars are ones with the keyless entry - e.g. new Renaults - as you have no choice but to take the silly card thing with you. Also you can get these little lock capsuoles (look like a giant padlock) that you lock around the towing eye or somthing similar. I'm not sure whether they are combination or have a separate key that you take with you but they look really solid and are an obvious visual deterrent. Scrot bags may find a weakness in this system soon though...

My favorite place is on a key chain that I leave in the boat's ignition. For shore diving the old kind of key went in my dive sock, but I got 'caught' one day after about 5 years of doing that.

If you dive/surf etc in South Wales (UK) be very cautious about sticking the keys on/under the car. Some places in pembs, gower and porthcawl have real problems with car crime and surfers etc are watched from the dunes or other cars and their key hideaways noted ready for theft! The police have even taken to watching carparks with CCTV in places because the problem is so bad! You have been warned!

I always hide mine on the beach like some of you lot, but a word of warning! Dont do as i once did when kitesurfing and stash them in a watertight canister and burry in the sand beneath my kite bag on the beach! I stayed out too long, tide came in, my bag got moved back by well meaning fellow kitesurfer....keys lost...Alfa charged £300 for a replacement!!!!!! gutted!

As i remember, not so long ago you could get a thing called a "key safe"....its like a large-ish hollow padlock/safe thing that you put your car keys in, clip like a padlock to chasis of car and all you have to do is remember the combination to open it!!!

May be worth a look....

I slip the spare key into my glove so it lays flat against the back of my hand, i'd never know it was there. If i had an electronic key i think i'd either buy something like an 'Otter Box' and hang it off a float or tie it inside a condom and put it inside the leg of my suit above my knife straps.

If i have my OMER atoll float with me i put them inside of the waterproof case if not i hide them chassis or bury in sands or hide somewhere else :)

I walk to the Beach and shore enter so the only problem i have is people stealing my cressi flip-flops, which they have done on numerous occasions. so any tips on where to stash my flippys?. :) :) :)

A stainless Carabiner works great. I put the straps through the carabiner then glip the flipflops to my float.

Thanks Amphibious.
Then all i need to do is hang a steel mug and thermos to my float and look like one of those land hunters.LOL. :) rofl :)

Looking through replies I think I will go with a waterproof bag or box, what are your comments on boxes or pouches you use on float or under wetsuit and what make ??

Decided agaist hiding on the car after hearing about the welsh scrots.
As for hiding keys on the beach knowing my luck I would not find them again or the tide would cover them.

Hi Jurrasic
the otter boxes are good and if you get one of the small shell collectors net-bags pop the key in the box put the box in the net and hang the net on the float and no thieving welsman will get at it LOL. :) :) :)
