Since a long time I think that DeeperBlue is missing a category dedicated to sciences. Personally, on DB I enjoy the most reading topics related to physiology, biology, anthropology, archeology, history, astronomy (water on other planets and moons), physics (i.e. mechanics of fluids). And I know that there are several other members who enjoy those threads too, and actively participate in them, although they otherwise rarely "socialize" in other threads.

I suggest creating a "Science" subcategory of the Freediving category, with several further subcategories:
  • Medicine & Physiology
  • Biology & Oceanology
  • History & Anthropology
  • Physics & Astronomy
I though also about Technology, but most topics would be better in the current Freediving Equipment category anyway, so it would be redundant.

There are numerous threads in DB that could be moved there immediately.

I believe it would make it easier for irregular DB visitors to find those topics, and it would also assure that regulars won't oversee important threads in the steadily growing mass of daily posts.

Stephan (and moderators), please consider this suggestion. And others, please express your opinion.

Thank you,
Ivo

Good idea! And at the same time could you please implement the famous RSS hack for vbulletin so that people have the possibility to subscribe with RSS to the category of their likings...

Yes, would not be bad, but in the meantime you can use the DB feed through my server - it filters out spam, scuba, spearfishing, and gossip (birthdays etc), keeping only freediving related posts.

Besides it, instead of showing only new threads like the current DB feed does, the APNEA.cz RSS feed for DB adds a new entry for each new post, so you won't miss important information.

Subscribing to the filtered DB forum is possible through this link: APNEA.cz: Freediving News from DBforum

Hmm, I wonder if Stephan saw this thread. I saw him posting yesterday, so he is certainly around. I'd expected he would peek into any new threads in the Support forum, so am little bit surprised he did not comment (whatever his opinion is).

Stephan, if you are there, could you please tell us what you think? I can understand if you refuse adding new categories, but would like to be sure you at least saw the suggestion.

And others who come to visit this thread, please vote in the poll, so that we see if the suggested categories would be appreciated by others and not just myself.

Hi Ivo,

Sorry for not responding a little earlier. Yep Stephan and the Mentors have seen this and we're currently discussing ways of implementing something across the Freedive section.

Cheers,
Ben

No problem, there is no hurry. I was just afraid it went unnoticed.

Ivo,

Your suggestion has been noted as Ben has said - it is being actively discussed with the senior members of the team and is being looked into incorporated in the larger freediving category changes we're going to be applying.

I am currently working nearly 14 hours a day at the moment so I can't always respond quickly.

Back to the topic: after rethinking, I believe that in fact better than doing the Science category under Freediving, would be creating it in the General section. Many of the science threads already existing are either very remotely related to freediving (or not at all). They are though water related.

Sorry for the impatience, but I just wonder if any decision was made. I have couple of interesting topics I'd like to post about, that would be best placed in the new category. But if there is no plan creating the category, or if it needs significant time before it can be done, I may forgot some of them, so it may be better if I post them to the Beach Bar category before it happens :)

Please do not interpret this post as a pressure - I understand that changing the structure may require good weighting of the arguments. Just let us know if you think the decision can be done within days, or that it will rather take weeks or longer.

Ivo,

I'd post in the beach bar for now - it won't be too long before we have made changes but I can't put a timescale on it yet.

Thanks!

Any news on this, Stephan? Or was the idea definitely abandoned?

Ivo,

The idea is going to be implemented but was waiting on the upgrade to be finished first. Now that is done I can concentrate on a few other things, including this.

Great! Thanks, Stephan! :friday

Could we move some past threads to the category? I already started tagging some of them in the past, so you can find couple of adepts under the following tags, but there are still many other ones. I'll continue tagging them as I stumble over others.

DeeperBlue.net Forums - Threads Tagged with science
DeeperBlue.net Forums - Threads Tagged with physiology
DeeperBlue.net Forums - Threads Tagged with biology
DeeperBlue.net Forums - Threads Tagged with evolution
DeeperBlue.net Forums - Threads Tagged with space

EDIT: since I can move threads that I started myself without moderator priviledges, I already moved couple of them
