caught the fever in Alaska

Well, thanks to the folks at Snorkel Alaska in Ketchikan, you've got yet another member registering and saying hello. Being very comfortable in the water but never having snorkeled before, I was absolutely amazed as I was immersed in this alien world underwater. Swimming in the midst of a kelp forest, everything seemed unreal.

The big treat was that as soon as the snorkeling group waddled out of the water in our 7mm wetsuits, we were greeted by this fellow about 15-20 feet away:

As soon as I got home, I immediately hit the web and started looking into snorkeling and freediving. Living in coastal north carolina, I have pretty convenient access to the coast. Since the stories of SWB are definitely scaring the hell out of me, I am learning as much as I can before I hit the water. I plan to take things very slow--and now I have reason number 200 to quit smoking

Thanks all Yes, there's actually a great story behind the eagle in the photo. While we were snorkeling around the reefs, there was a large boulder above the water. That eagle in the picture had just caught a salmon (from a fisherman's hook, no less) and was devouring it on top of the boulder. The boulder was just a couple feet away from us. I looked up from the reef (trying to find octopus) and was amazed that this eagle was sitting there watching us as he ate his lunch. This shot is after he ate his lunch.

Thanks for the warm welcome! I'm trying to find some good locations to do snorkeling off of the outer banks, NC. Does anyone have any ideas?
