Hey guys,

First I want to say hello to all of you, I’m a German guy who lives in New Zealand at the moment. Here I really enjoy Spear fishing. In a couple of month I have to go back to Europe and was thinking about to get a 90 cm gun (here I use a 110) for France and Portugal.

I just wrote a mail to omer to ask the difference between these guns. I got a mail back, but now I'm a bit confused. Please discuss with me this mail. And what do you think about the difference between the cayman carbon and the xxv gold?

>Dear Flo,
tanks for contact us.
I try to answer you:
1) the barrel of Cayman Carbon is 28 mm diameter.
2) the differences between this 2 guns are specially in the barrel: the Cayman Carbon have a cylindrical barrel in carbon (1,5 mm thickness) with shaft guide. The Cayman HF have a barrel in aluminium Hydro formed. The biggest difference is in the volume of the air inside the barrel. The volum of HF is bigger than in Cayman Carbon. So, if you want a very easy and flexible gun in the water is probably better the Carbon. If you prefer a gun to use with double band and a big shaft (specially if you love wait the fish on the bottom) is better the Cayman HF.
Anyway, if you visit http://www.omersub.com/fucili.asp you will found more information.

Best regards and happy new year also to you.<

Cheers
Flo

HF personally. i have Both the Cayman Carbon and the HF (both in 110 and a HF in 130)

probably the best all round gun i have used and is very accurate.

Carbon is nice but HF is much more stable to shoot.

just my opinion

How I understand the mail from omer, the carbon barrel is easier to use (long surface swimming, tracking...) and feels lighter. But isn't the hf supposed to be faster tracking?
So , when the fh is faster in tracking, more stable in the water and is better for two rubbers, why should someone buy the carbon one? It's nearly the same price.

Is there any good reason to buy the carbon gun?

Thanks
Flo

I have the HF and HF2, but I don't have the carbon, the HF2 is the easiest to move around, very pleasant gun to have in the water. The HF has a lot of volume, tend to be light on muzzle - but you could add the muzzle weight. But if you are a looking for a easy gun to move around include the HF2 in you research.

nope not really any reason for the carbon, i dont think.

the principal advantages of carbon have tradionally been light weight and rigid. the rigidity is now no longer an issue with the hydro forming being as stiff if not stiffer.

the Carbon will be easier to manuever in th3e vertical plain becuase it is narrower but very little difference will be noticed in the horizontal plane.

as per strange love the HF models are the pick of the litter thats for sure. the HF has the better shaft and real as factory compared to the HF2 not having the reel or the tabbed shaft.... unless your one of the guys that managed a HF2 LE.

Like your self I have both of them HF and HF2, the HF2 is cheaper so with the left over money one can buy a match 50 reel and a another shaft. I also don't like the standart HF shaft, I like 7 mm shaft, for HF2 I like the 6.75 shaft, the first thing I did after getting my HF2 LE.

If the intent is to have an easy gun to move around the HF2 is more manuvrable then HF, I will probably get an HF2 90 this year to replace my sporasub, my goal is to catch up with you since you are beating me on a few caymans.

hahahahaha, its gonna be tricky! i'm fairly blessed when it comes to getting Omer gear (Sporasub as well)

interesting that you didnt like the HF shaft, agree the HF2 shaft is VERY average, but the HF shaft in both my 110 and 130 were much better than i expected, i have never owned a SS spear i liked from any brand (mind you have never owned a Trygons so maybe they are nice) but i was pleasently surprised with the strength of the Tabbed shafts from Omer (america) that came on my guns as factory (almost 7mm on the 130).

traditionally i have always without acception exchanged my shafts for Spring steel of either Rob Allen or ORCA brand (ORCA being the nicest finish and most robust i have used)

Mind you, you will always have one gun i do not.... 110 HFLE i sold my sample to a shop and have regreated it ever since. but you live and you learn, now i just need to convince Sporasub to make the "One" gun in a 130 or longer...

I actually own a couple of trygons shafts, they came with one of the teak-sea, I am not that impressed, I replace them with the technosport shaft 7.1 mm. These are really good, I do like the 6.75 mm one shaft, that is the current shaft I am using on my HF2LE, on the one I am using the 7.1 technosport.

The LE is a hard gun to let go, my is the 100 very nice, I am probably getting a 90 this year.

i have the carbon and a crappy seahornet but the carbon is extremely light but it does have a shallow rail but thats the only small fault with it its a brilliant gun over all i havnt even seen the hf tho

I have the carbon in a 75. Excellent for weed and close reef work if you use a lighter 6.3mm shaft. Fantastic range for a 75 too. Great gun.

Only problem is metal wishbones much up the barrel. I switched mine to dyneema straight away.

Found this vid where the spearo is using an OMER Carbon 75

It shows exactly the kind of conditions in which the carbon excels. In clearer vis I'd definately go with the longer, more stable HF.

Great Video ! Definitly shows how easy the gun moves around. Also plenty of power, some big fish was landed.
