well i have one of those guns with the sliding rig line attachment to the 6mm sharft, but (its a cheap0 gun) that broke off (since it was plastic) which left me with the only option of making a sliding twisted wire attachment to attach the rig line(i couldnt drill a hole because the 6mm sharft is extremely weak(bends all the time), however the boodly thing keeps on coming up over the notchs since its just soft wire and i end up having to knock it agaist a rock to get it off and reload the gun(nightmare

) anyway so i decided to extend the rig line but now the muzzel stucture (that holds the front of the line) has broken leaving me with too much line to get tangeled(almost shot my gun with the rig line on the snorkel! omg!) and with myself upgrading to higher band power the situation is just going to get worse.
And so ends the history lesson

So i decided to buy an old alvey(its actually steelite) trolling fishing reel to fit as a gun reel for $10.
DSCF1259.jpg

however as this is the 1st time rigging a gun reel i have a few questions???

the reel has no drag, so i want to attach a muzzel bungee, where on the line would i attach this, to the spear then to the cord or what?

i cannot vary when the reel will stop, so if my spear's momentum is cut short then the reel will unwind a large amount of unnessary line causing a tangle, can i overcome this by sticking my knuckle into the gun at the right moment like people do with baitcasters when line fishing?

when winding the line back on the line must remain taught to achieve a uniformed loaded bail or else the line may cause a tangel, how should i acheve this?, i was thinking with a sieres of one or more guides ether as a fishing rod tip or attached to the barrel and muzzel?

althrough its too late now i would just like to know where i should have situated the reel? i situated it so that its would be off balance a sight amount in that the muzzel would sink 1st hence pointed away from me, if for any reason i was to let the gun go?

also any general tips on gun reels would be much apprciated?

cheers guys, this would be much appreciated, i cant wait to try it out this weekend.
regards Sam

Hi Sam,

No chance anyone can persuade you to get another gun - new or 2nd hand?

Think you are making life harder adding more bands and an Alvey - can only see chaos comming from firing that combination. Bird nest of low weight mono at best.

There is a local spearing club to you that may have a gun they can lend you, or at least help you out with advice. Have a search on google for them.

hey otgav thanks for the replie, i do have another gun but its under maitainence( needs sharft drilled and rigged(have fixed it up myself with sliding rig line and twisted wire attachment with washers but its pretty dogy as im afraid the muzzel is too big for the washers and they may get stuck)) and i do like using this gun as im pretty good with it --> apparently i can get a blow touch on the tip then twist it off with vice and vice grips but im afraid ill snap the sharft(its a weak little thing which bends easly and maitains a brown coat of rust)
im in tweed/palm beach club
but how dose this reel differantiate to a normal gun reel? i mean is there reel-ly any big differance.
and ill be using new venetinain blind cord for the line(same stuff in the pic) - just have to figure out how to wind it back on each time making sure to keep it taught to avoid a tangle hey?

Main differences that I can think of without having a look at it would be drag & line guide / covers.

All means you can have your reel & line set up so it don't fall apart in the swell or when the gun moves, but feeds out when you shoot - and then can be wound back in and shot again withouth nesting up.

I think you've built yourelf an on-going challenge......

its all sport :D
year so gun reels have a drag and a guide - i could have got one of these with a guide but i guss ill just make a couple out of wire and attach em to the barrel or i could use a fishing rod tip --> what would you suggest?
and as far as the drag gos i'll just have to attach a muzzel bungee to the spear to the rig line - is that cool?
also how do normal guns stop unwinding?
and these guides that they have on them, do they move up and down to lay the line down evenly like on baitcasters?

dont worry about it falling to bits ive really overdone bike inner tubes with cable ties with contrictor knots so it should be ok for the river. the inner tube gives the friction which is applied with the cable ties and constictor knots.

cheers mate

Falling to bits maybe not - line falling off your reel & rig as you swim, I think thats going to happen all the time without drag to lock the line in place until you shoot + nesting as you respool it after shooting.

But hey, you rig it how you want, and shoot how you like - it's all good, and fun.

For the time you're spending adding bands, bending wire, trying to straighten soft spear, and wrestling it all underwater I think that heading up to Adreno in Bris in the next week or so (Xmas sale starts on Sat) would be well worth the money - you should be able to pick up something cheap that shoots straight without needed to re-engineer it. Or even just a new spear that has back hole drilled and fits your mech - and doesn't bend too easily.

well ill find out this-sar-vo whether it works or not but if it dosent ill just have to use a blow torch and vice grips to get the tip off/ if not ill just cut it off and get the local metal work shop to re-thread,

i bought another shaft from adreno for my undersea gun but the thread is stange and dosent fit most of my 8mm threads (that are undersea!!!)
maybe i can rectifie that by cutting a thread using a brass cluster tip --> is that right??

looks like i can get one from adreno, ill definately think about it, mine you ive just bought another gun the same gun off ebay.

o-well ill let you know how it gos:D

hey,hey i got the tip off by hammering it while turning then using a vice(something that i dont have but desperatly need!) at a mates place --> yippeeeee
so then i filed the thread off a nut and used that behind the line attachment to stop the thing from coming over the notches --> problem solved :)
however i guss i should just aswell see how the set up gos now, could'nt go today because ive got a coughf maybe in the next few days ill keep you posted.
cheers mate and do know how the normal gun reels prevent the de-spooling of the line??
heres an updated pic

well i took it out for a spin today (if youll pardon the pun) and everything went ok, there was no over spin-out of line, no line coming off as i swam(well not enough to cause a tangle) everything went just as hoped it would except for the conditions i was diving in in the river - windy and murky= no-cool but at least the gun reed is
i suppose ill leave it on even through it is pretty pointless except it could come in handy under the bridge which i hunt regularly
cheers
