While I would love to eventually get something like a D4, budget right now requires an 'el cheapo especial' route so that I can do the courses and get the rest of the equipment I need without needing to sell a kidney.

Any recommendations for a cheap but somewhat decent waterproof watch that won't suffer a premature death in my first dive with it? I just need something to time my dives, doesn't have to be very fancy or nice. Preferably without hello kitty art on it :)

You might just need to go with this new one!!!!

Best dive watch I've ever owned!

SOLD.

does it come with complimentary stick to shoo the barracudas away from all the shinny stuff?

How about a D3 Suunto? About 60% of the price of a D4...

I had a cheaper Casio when I started ~ $50 but it didn't start timing until sometimes I was 5, 10, even 30 seconds into the dive.

I too am in the same boat, I'd love a new D4 but as I'm just finishing 2 years of study, budget comes into it. I presently don't actually have a watch as such, I use an ordinary scuba depth guage that I got 2nd hand off my Dad (see bubble blowers are useful for something apart from shark bait hahaha) I bought a wrist mounting strap for $40 from my local dive shop. The guage has a resetable needle that records the deepest dive, so even though I have no real idea of how long I've been under water I can state accuratly my deepest dive for the day in my log book.
