We have an hour to go but the wave went through Tahiti a few hours ago and should be in New Zealand and California by now. Has anyone heard any up to date reports?

It seems Hawaii as a whole was spared. There were some 2-3 ft tidal surges, but nothing serious and no damage. Lots of semi-panic and overreaction, at least we were all prepared. My thoughts with those in Chile though. Thanks for the concern DB.

8.8! I've never heard of a quake that large before, or even close it. Our thoughts & prayers are with you & your family Azapa.

8.8 is really huge. My thoughts are with them too, and hope for the less damage and loss possible. Hope Azapa is safe.

Note: people living along the same tectonic plate (and the ones near) should expect frequent aftershocks in the coming weeks, as the plates readjust. After such a huge earthquake it is usual. So people in South and Central America, and perhaps in California too, please be careful.

The Chile earthquake in 1960 in the same spot is the largest ever recorded on earth, I guess part of the massive uplifting of the Andes mountain chain.
