A wee bit tired of looking at black & para military inspired camo spearguns. So decided to "hang loose" & take some inspiration from how the longboard tribe colour their boards. Here is the colours for the 3 & 4 rubber guns I intend to use over the next year or so. The two rubber guns are still being finished & they will be red, gold & green, "cool running".(y)

The three I intend to use soon are rigged now. I had a spare blank in the three rubber size so tried green, gold & red. I don't like it as much as red, gold & green but I really do like those colours on spearguns. I'm just so tired of seeing paramilitary fashion on spearfishing kit. Cool Runnings.

The three guns I decided to take on a short trip out of Cairns. I landed a couple of nice fish, but I should have done much better. The mistake IMO was taking 11/32 spears instead of 3/8 ( it wont happen again). The difference in energy at the muzzle is only minimal, but that 15% weight difference becomes much greater the further the spear has to travel. I also wont be taking the two smaller guns on a trip like this again, if there is any chance of running into fish over 50kg, these were my backup/spares on the trip which ment when I lost a spear in a fish (I lost four with slip tips) with the larger gun, I had to use one of these until I returned to the big boat to re rig another spear. I also found them a bit too big on the couple of ocassions I spent in the shallows "rattling the bird cage", next time I will just use a specialist two rubber gun with a 1.9m x 7.5mm straight shaft for reefies instead of a compromise. I wished I had taken a second one of those four rubber blue guns (or larger) as we found a spawning aggregation of dogtooth tuna. The fish were there & there were some big ones ( it was a proper spawning school!!), but they werent very hungry, which ment they were a bit smarter & more cautious (not the boys they were still dumb). I just thought people would appreciate my reflections on the gear I like to use on these fish & the mistakes. I also must comment that the more & more roller guns & demultiplied guns I see used in this type of diving ( several day trips to remote areas with lots of opportunities) the more I am turned away from them.
