Chumming and (safe) distance from the boat

After my first experiance at Real Blue water spearing last month i have decided to give it a real go next time, in about a month from now. Two things i didn't do was chumming and sitting in wait a long distance away from the boat (in the chum stream)
Last time i went alone and didn't go more than 100m away from the boat. It was pretty scarey being out there alone, but in a good way i guess cause i stayed out there anyway. So does Chum bring in the fish or is it to risky with sharks around? Also how far should i be away from the boat in order to get a better chance at something a bit bigger next time?

Dont go alone.
yes, sharks will come to the chum.
Fish will be everywere on the cum line.
Some like tuna will just come and check it out,
or stay, wahoo might be down and go to the surface.
Mahi, if hungry( i mean not full of food until it sticks out of the mouth)
, will have a blast on the surface eating the chum.
The boat can be right next to you, no big deal, shut off engines.
Good luck,have fun, use flashers too.
 
Just in case you don't happen to know (and just in case you happen to give a damn), if you spear a fish while chumming, it will not be eligible for an IBRSC record unless the chum was from fish that you speared on site, yourself.

I don't personally care about missing the remote possibility of a record, but I just didn't you to come up with a record fish and then be disappointed when your application was turned down.

A guy I know shot what would have been a world record albacore off Monterey, CA, but they were chumming with frozen dead anchovies, so it didn't count.

And to complicate application of this silly rule, what if other boats near you are chumming, but you are not? There is a spot out in the Gulf of Mexico off the mouth of the Mississippi River called the Midnight Lump where the tuna fishing is very good, and when the fish are in, there are always lots of fishing boats anchored and chumming. I'm not positive of this, but it is my impression that Julie Riffe lost a chance for a woman's record yellowfin tuna because the boats around her were chumming.
 
Not to hijack the thread Bill, but did anything ever come of buying the DBD recording of that spearing show series on satellite TV? I'd like to get one.

I managed to scam a copy from the producer at the party at his house after the film festival showing of the pilot, but I don't think they are for sale.

Terry Maas made another DVD using portions of footage from all the shooting for the series to show at the Christmas meeting of his club, the Long Beach Neptunes, and it is really incredible. I managed to scam a copy of that one too, but it is not available for sale because the Outdoor Channel may end up using that footage on the series, so that wouldn't want anyone to be selling it.

But all this reminds me- I guess I should start a thread announcing this new TV program starting in January. All I need to do is figure out which forum it belongs in. Or has someone already announced the program?

Hi, been working in BKK for a while so I had no time for emails, other than business related ones!!!!
Back to the chumming, Thanx for the advice Bill, there is a real chance that i will come across record sized fish because the area has never been spearfished to my knowladge.
Problem is, i am not skilled enough to take out a fish that size, unless i go for the world record flying fish title, saw some monsters out there last time, i thought they were rainbow runners!!!!!
Anyhow it is great for future referance thought, is the a site with these regulations on???

And, BTW, there is another record keeping organization, and it has more lenient rules. I believe it permits chumming, and also permits taking a shot from the surface. The IBRSC requires you to be fully submerged and holding your breath. I think that is a little silly, since 1 foot deep for the time it took to pull the trigger would put me in compliance, but hardly set me apart from the guy on the surface.
