Hi guys, I recently picked up a Sphera mask to replace one that I lost a year or so ago. Is it usual to give these a cleaning before you start using them? I took the new one in the water a few days ago and it seemed to fog easily. But being that the lenses are polycarbonate I wouldn't want to risk scratching them while trying to get them cleaned up. Thanks for any input.

Hey Frank,

Try toothpaste. The simpler the paste the better, as some 'whitening' pastes use tiny fragments to scrub teeth, which would scratch your mask. Rub in some paste and wash out thoroughly, since you don't want any residu ending up in your eyes; those will be the freshest tears you'll ever cry. But if you do it well you'll have a mask that won't go "fog you!" all the time and it'll be a minty surprise on the nose, as well. Goes for old masks with the same foggin' problem too.

How are the aquadynamics on the Sphera? Can you do a turn/push off at full speed without them ending up somewhere near your feet?

Blub,

Daniel

I just spit in my sphera and rub it around to clean it. It's worked on the four that I have owned so far, and they scratch so easily that I seem to need a new one about every season.

Toothpaste is fine for my other masks, with glass lenses in them, but I would be scared to try that out on my Sphera.

Jon

Yeah, I avoided useing the toothpaste method for my Sphera also.

Although I always kept the Sphera in its case, it will inevitably scratch up a bit. However the surface scratches seem to be irrelevant once you put the mask in the water.

Thanks, guys -- I'd be gun shy about using toothpaste on mine too. The lens material is just too easy to muck up. Having done the spit treatment on masks pre-dive for several years now, that's an easy way to go.

Frank,

Here is the delema! You can only use spit in your Sphera mask, ....if you want to keep the micro thin, anti-fog coating that it comes with from the factory. The first time you us any defog (or toothpaste), you will have to use the defog from then on.

I love my Sphera masks :inlove , but if I so much as breath near them, they get scratched.

Jim

My Sphera is starting to get a little dirty on the outside, it's a buildup of crud thats slowly turning into milky film. How do you guys maintain your Sphera? will soap and cotton wool do the trick or can you use something a little stronger?

Cheers,
Ben

Ben,
That milky film washes off easily with warm water and dishsoap.

As far as antifog, I've only ever used spit in my spheras (3 so far) I find as well that I go through about one per season, however I use it twice a week for UWH, and for all of my freediving as well. They are getting harder to find though... I just found some for sale and bought 5 So I should be in business for awhile!

Cheers,
Aaron

Make sure that you rinse the Sphera in fresh water after each use. If you are having a problem with fogging, for god sakes NO SPITTING!!! Aqua Sphere makes an anti-fog solution that is made especially for the Seal and the Sphera.

Spitting works great in my sphera and pretty much everyone elses as far as I'm aware. I've tried many antifog solutions and nothing compares with a spit and rinse at the waters edge....why are you against it?

Spitting is gross. Just kidding, my main thing against spitting is the fact that the spit is just temporary. If you get water in the lenses your hard work is over, plus you have to do it every time you get into the water. I use the anti-fog with Seal and Sphera goggles/masks and basically only have to reaply it when I start to fog up again, depending on how often I use them. For me, the product works, and I don't have to worry about doing it everytime I get into the water.

....but it's part of my whole prep routine and I'm sure if I stop I won't dive as deep

Don't toothpaste your Sphera !!
Only works for glass lenses not plastic, I know someone who ruined a brand new spera mask by toothpasting it, it really scratched it up and is now hard to see thru now even when it's not fogged. :waterwork

To clean it I use dishwasing liquid / detergent with warm water. I also use anti-fog although I use one that's meant for swimming goggles (also plastic lens) rather then diving mask anti-fog(meant for glass lenses). I used a normal mask anti-fog once and it was useless.

I'm with Andy, even with anti-fog, I like a good mask spit..... just don't do it too much when at the pool. :t

Well Andy, if spitting helps you dive deeper, I won't mess with your ritual. Let me talk to Aqua Sphere and see what the recommend to clean the Sphera for sure.
