Hi

can anyone of you answer my question:

Does the level of CO2 during a deep freedive anyhow affect the risk of DCS?

Thanks for your help and this great forum!

hi Bandos

DCS is related to nitrogen - not CO2 - so not as far as I am aware!

It is not quite precise. Nitrogen is the most studied DCS trigger, because it is the main concern at scuba diving. CO2 gets eliminated at normal dives. However, you will find studies, especially those related to rebreathers, where high CO2 is always a possibility, which show that high CO2 level has amplifying effect on the risk of DCS. You will certainly be able finding plenty of links if you enter the right keywords into Google.

Hence CO2 is not only an important factor to trigger N2 narcosis, but also DCS. Personally I suspect that many of freediving DCS incidents may be related to CO2 degassing. For example the reports of Eric Fattah, who experienced DCS symptoms even after FRC dives, support that theory.
