I'm in Bonaire and about to go home after 3 weeks. Shot a lot of movies with my GoPro (and some with the Canon G11).

Anything over 4-5 feet has the blue washout. I don't want to add a red filter because i have a great light (Sola 1200) for when I shoot things close up.

Anyone know any software for a Mac which can help me color correct? I have iMovie but it's not that helpful.

Thanks.

Andy

Hi Andy,
I'm not certain but i would think that cineform will let you do a colour fix? [thats the gopro software available on their site].
also the G11 should have the canon editing software which can do white balance.
There's more specific info here: GoProUser.freeforums.org • Login

On most cameras you can adjust the white-balance, so it is a good idea to carry a piece of white plastic and adjusting the camera before shooting in the given conditions. However, underwater, unless you have sufficient artificial light, the balance adjusting has only a limited effect, because the red part of the spectrum is simply missing (or is deeply suppressed), hence there is not much you can do about. The same goes for the video post-processing: the color information about the longer wavelengths is not included in the video data, so although the post-processing can adjust the light curves, it has no chance to restore perfect colors.

Install Final Cut Pro on Your Mac, it has great color correction tools. 3-way color corrector in Your case will fix underwater footage just fine. Final Cut will not understand GoPro file but You can convert it to ProRes file using free MPEG Streamclip software for smooth editing.

wow!! this is a great forum. thanks one and all for replies. (they lost one of my bags when i got to ny from bonaire so only now back on the computer!!)

final cut pro is great but too involved for me. although i am an agent in tv commercials for vfx and animation, i was looking for a simple solution but something with a bit more power than iMovie. with that explanation of the blue wash, maybe the best i can do without getting overly complex will be iMovie.

i know iPhoto is fantastic for my color correcting because it has a button for white balance.

anyway, i will keep trying. thanks to one and all.
