Come and FreeDive in Kona!!!!

Hi Everyone,

For the last couple of years I have been visiting the Kona coast and have enjoyed it immensely. I have met some freedivers there and I recently realized that I want to spend more time there training and practicing. Further I thought it would be fun to be able to invite speargunners and freedivers (and others) to come and visit as well. In this way I could enjoy the freediving community while training and hunting myself.

So, in pursuit of that vision, I have leased a large house on the Kona coast, 20 minutes South of Kona and less than 15minutes from Kealakakua Bay/Captain Cook and Honaunau (Place of Refuge).

www.letsgo-hawaii.com/snorkeling/kona.html
Click on the links to see nice pics....

It is a five bedroom, 3000sqft home with all the amenities. Fully furnished.
I leased it for the purpose of having a base to freedive from while in HI (I live and work in the San Francisco Bay Area).

I am not interested in running a B&B or hotel but I would like to get some help with the rent bill from visiting guests (The lease on the house is $5000 a month). Most hotels and B&Bs in the area run $100-$250 a night and up. I will ask for about $300 a week (which is less than half of most similar stays and the house is quite luxurious) but I am very negotiable - so talk to me -like I said, I am not running a hotel. I am trying to make friends and create opportunities for adventure.....

If you really want to put in a longer training session, I am certainly willing to entertain short-term share-rentals for $1000 a month, again, I am negotiable. I am only seeking help with the lease, not a profit.

It would be really nice to have people like you come and visit and dive, there is a lot to see and do and we all will learn something from each other.

The location is prime, the diving is wonderful. Dolphins, turtles, coral and every kind of sea critter is within 10minutes from the front door. Water is blue, viz - 25-35meters, temp 79degrees to 250ft....and did I mention its blue?????Fruit trees on the property, basketball court, BBQ - a climate so temperate that the house has neither a heating or a cooling unit.....

There is a full kitchen and all familiar retail outlets nearby. Also, you can certainly manage this on the cheap and ship some food and supplies ahead of time, I do it myself.

Speargunning: Marlin, Tuna, Ono, Wahoo, Mahi-Mahi, Ulua, Reef Fish, ..... Kona is a world class destination for trophy hunters. I have encountered Marlin in Kealakakua Bay, in 90ft of water less than 100meters from shore..... There are spearfishing charters and I may have some connections for boats and local people....Four mile road and Two Step are about 15minutes from the front door....

Of course, I expect to have some fish in the freezer (or we can eat yours : ))

Performance Freediving.com Courses in Kona: For those of you that are taking Performance Freediving courses in Kona, contact me.....

The lease opens May 8 and I will have it until at least Nov. 1

AirFares:
Flights to Kona are very cheap from San Francisco and LA - if you are planning a trip, contact me, I have a lot of experience finding really cheap airfares.... The least expensive connections are through Hawaiian Air, Hawaiian Sun Vacations, etc.... and average $299 - I have seen short term offers as low as $217 but $299-$399RT from San Francisco or LA is about right....

I am shipping a car there but I suggest that you rent one for independance, there is plenty of parking at the house.

If you are interested and want pics, just ask.

All of the attached pics were taken at Honaunau (with a disposable camera!!)....

Looking forward to meeting some of you! Come and train!

Lungfish

Yea, the colors are incredible.
I flew out of there a year ago in October and it had snowed on the volcano, Mauna Kea. So you could see blue water, blue-green water, black lava coast, green jungle and brilliant white snow.....
It is a beautiful place.

Wow! Lungfish, looks like fun, do you mind if I show up with a wife and 1year old? Just kidding, we're already planning a trip to Oahu next winter, would love to find some divers to hook up with there. I've never been out with proficcient divers before, I think it would help me get past twenty meters.

Anyway, last fall I got the opportunity to spend a most magical morning off place of refuge towards Captain cooks in the open water of the bay there, my avatar and these attached pics were shot during that morning. Truly one of the most incredible dive experiences I've had, I would just dive straight down and wait, and the dolphins would come and circle me during my ascent.:inlove Aaahh, anyone contemplating taking advantage of this gracious offer should make up their mind and GO! I still daydream way to often about that day, it has become my "special place" that I use to calm my nerves.

Hey Lungfish check my bio and email me. Maybe we can work together. I've lived and dove in Kona for the past 13 years and know alot about the areas you are talking about.

Hi khel, Arriflex and DSV,

You are all certainly welcome.... and Arriflex, let me know when you are on Oahu - it is a cheap hop between there and Kona. You could stop in for a day or two or I could come your way. It would be good for me to meet other freedivers on that island. And family are no problem, bring your new wife and child. Just remember that the place is on a slope and there are some safety issues for little ones but family wouldn't disqualify you..... Out of curiosity, why are you going to Oahu? I have been to Oahu and think that you should come to Kona instead.:)

Your pics look alot like mine.... I agree with you, it is one of my most favorite places, truly magical.

I hope everyone who reads this gets that message....

DSV, thanks for the gracious offer. We will have to get together when I am on-island and discuss this some more. There are so many places that I want to explore on the island that I haven't even had the chance to yet. Do you come down to Honaunau on Sundays w/the weekly gathering?

if you ever feel like it, I am always ready for a swim and would welcome a dive partner. I have met a few folks over the past year like Rob over at BWH.... hopefully I will get to know some more. I think I want to try blue water spearfishing....

For anyone who is further interested or just wants to get connected, I will be using this BB a lot and will give out an email address through pm if you ask.

attached are a few more pics from Honaunau...

I just want everyone to know that the response to this has been really positive and I hope a few of you take me up on this offer and come and swim in a truly beautiful place.... It would be great to have one continous BBQ/swim party for the next 6 months. A party house with a serious swimming problem.....
