Competition questions - need quick answers

Please can someone give me a correct answer, somebody has asked me these questions:

When you're diving in a competition, you stated previous how deep you hope to go and get set a tag at that depth. Is this correct? Then you have to "fetch and produce" the tag from that depth to qualify?

What is the tag, and what do you do with it? Sara: The tag is made of what material, where do you attach it when you get it, and does it say the depth on it?

The qualifying depth is read by obtaining the tag, or is the diver's computer also used? Who decides the exact depth obtained?

Yes that's correct.....

Its made of a lightweight hard plastic, you don't attach it to anywhere, you hold it in your hand and yes it says the depth on it.

I think the answer to that is 'if you have the tag, thats your depth for points purposes, if you don't have the tag, the computer is used. The in water judges determine the exact depth if the tag is not produced.

can someone clarify the last point? the in-water judges, are they also down below? I always thought they were on the surface only.

The in water judges are on the surface and will check the computer in the event the tag is not produced (I think).....

There is also an option to have a judge at the bottom plate, but that is rarely used. However, there will likely be a camera at depth and judgements on a dive are always pending until review of the bottom footage. So, if the judges give a white card on the surface, but after review see a line violation on the bottom video, penalties or a DQ could be given at that point.

The tags can be made of many materials. We often used nylon weight belts cut to 5 or 6 inch strips with the depth, competitor name, comp and date written on them. They have a clip attached to them to secure to the line. I have also heard of some competitons using small putty knives. You hold the tag in your hand.

If you return to the surface without your tag you are penalized one point and your depth is determined by your official competition depth guage.

So, if you're having a bad dive and need to turn early, you'll be penalized one point for no tag and penalized one point for every meter you didn't complete. E.g. Announced 50M. Achieved 40M. 40 (realized depth) - 10 (missed depth) - 1 (no tag) = 29 points.

I'd suggest that anyone planning to compete review the rules in detail. Their readily available and you should know them so as not to get disqualified by some silly oversight.
