Competition timing: World Championship Pool 2009, Nordic Deep. 2009

Hi everybody!

This year we're very fortunate to have two great freediving competitions:

World Championship Pool 2009, 17 - 22 August, Denmark.
FreeWC09
Pool: STA, DNF, DYN

Nordic Deep 2009, 10 - 16 August, Sweden
Freediving competition - Nordic deep
Pool & Depth: STA,DNF,DYN,CWT,CNF,FIM

Since both competitions locations and dates are so close I figured that people may like to attend both! - a great Scandinavian 2-3 week freediving vacation!

Then the question becomes obvious, which competition would you like to attend first?

- You may prefer Nordic Deep as a nice "warm-up" event.
- You may want to save your energy for the World Championship, and go later to compete in deep diving in close by Sweden!

I know Sebastian the Nordic Deep organiser will be watching this tread

Help our dear organisers, let's hear what you think!

Love, Courage and Water,

Kars

I'll be over there and keen to compete in Nordic Deep, but there's absolutely no way I'd do so the day before the world champs. A week later and I'll be there with bells on.

The question is if Sebastian will tune his event so it will have more pool time and less time in the wind on the platform.

I dont think a cold from the fresh weather out on the fjord is desireable so short before the WC...

Hi Martin, I'm sure inventive Sebastian can have a couple of posts with some plastic sheets to block out some wind, and maybe even 3-4 plastic chairs for the athletes to rest on. Those two improvement will go a long way keeping the athletes warm.
Even the skinny me managed last year

I like the depth disciplines the most, because it's basically my only chance to do some real depth.

Please people post some more about the timing issue.

One holiday, Two great events!

I was thinking that these two neighbouring events together can make up a really nice 2-3 week freedive holiday especially for those who travel from far to the World Championships.
Indeed a very nice chance to see, smell, hear and experience Scandinavia, the green magical land of the Vikings!

Love, Courage and Water,

Kars

Cold? Do like this.
(There was supposed to be a picture of me with a big, green dow jacket with an Elios-suit under)

I think it would be ideal to have the WC first, but now it is a bit late to change for me. I have already made a deal at work. I will just think of it as preparations. What is the closest you would do a max.dive before another max. (2 days?, 4 days? etc) I don`t know. I haven`t really had this problem before.

Hi guys... Sebastian hasn't answered yet (odd to have him silent, isn't it)
Of course we will keep you warm and happy before WC, and you will have ample time to do a great max in a quite relaxed atmosphere, (as those of you who've been to ND knows it is!) and then rest for WC. Also, ND has a lot of focus on the mental prep side, there will be yoga, meditation and hypnosis daily (some days only yoga) so this is really a good acclimatising opportunity to Scandinavia and zoom-in mentally for worlds. Can't wait to see all the old faces in Lysekil and some new ones too!

Well, I should keep quite. I want to hear what potential participants think.
I may just remark that last comp day at ND is many days before first comp day at WC.
And last day we had some unsunny days during deep dive, this year statistic scientists has promised us sun.
And yes Kars, more chairs.

Sebastian

Really, I don't think that scheduling a comp just before the quite intensive WCs is a good idea. A few days later would keep far more people happy, IMO. Of those that I've spoken to here, none would compete just before the WCs. Hell, what if you got squeeze?

Then again ND wasn't really scheduled to be just before worlds, it's around the same dates, same fjord every year for the last 5 years... and this year it was almost exactly the same dates as WC, so as soon as that became evident, the dates were changed to make it possible to attend both.
Sure it won't work for everyone, but that's ok... those who feel comfortable coming before WC will surely be keeping their optimal health in mind!

You can keep your annual dates if you wish, I'm just giving the opinion of people that will be travelling from afar. The original post asked which competition dates work best and I believe that few if any serious athletes would risk exaustion, peaking early, injury or setbacks in a competition just a day or two before the biggest event in the world for pool freedivers. The schedule of the WCs is tough enough without doing up to six competition events in the week leading up to it.

You are of course welcome to hold it before if you wish. I just don't understand why you'd want to.

Reactions: Kars
If you are a top class freediver aiming at a good ranking in the WC, you'd probably skip a competition with several events the week before (chrismar's view, can't disagree with it).

If you are a good freediver already living more or less in the region and aiming at maximizing your fun without fear of losing a medal in the WC, you'd probably attend ND as well (Kars' view, equally good).

But I stress "living more or less in the region", because frankly if I had 3 weeks' vacation dedicated to the joy of freediving I wouldn't spend all of them in Sweden and Denmark... no offence for the good scandinavian friends

Quite right rxcnc2... but it must be said the scandinavian summer can be lovely, she just often chooses not to be! So I understand the sentiment!

NORDIC DEEP

Due to the World Championships starting in Denmark (300km south) directly after Nordic Deep some athletes might not want to risk the health of their lungs at depth. For these athletes we will offer the following:

- Help with training time in the pool (25 meter, shallow).
- Healthy vegetarian food.
- More opportunities for pool competition starts (if there is room)
- Days of yoga and meditation practice / instead of deepdiving.
- Speciality clinic focusing on CO2/ O2 measurements (+spirometri), static, relaxation, yoga, focus and awareness.

Some funcomps relating to static that might make too serious athletes relax.

Sebastian
