Some years ago, a PC game called Blue Water Hunter was released, a spearfishing game. A friend of mine aquired it, but it had so many technical flaws that we were left dissapointed; we simply couldn't play it.

For so long, I've yearned for some gigantic freediving game, just for when I can't go get wet because of season, the price of gas, etc. But I figured that there would never be a market for such a game, so it would never be made. No game developer creates a huge game without some kind of really catching gaming element, and with freediving only the freedivers would find the bare freediving in itself a magnet gaming element. So I decided to accept cold Scandinavian weather, etc.

That is, until I bought Grand Theft Auto - San Andreas (for entirely different reasons!).

This is obviously not a freediving game. And yet the people behind it have found time to include that your character can go into the water and swim around (which you couldn't with previous GTA games, then you drowned). You can even dive down into the water now! And when you do that, the scenery below is very well crafted with sea grass, schools of fish, and even the occasional turtle or dolphin swimming around! The huge game city is loaded with beaches and cliff walls that you can go explore if you get tired of slaughtering drug dealers or running down cops, etc.! I have to admit I spend more time in the water than in the streets. Go figure.
The cool thing is that the more you go diving in your pimp suit or what ever, the bigger your lung capacity becomes and the longer you can hold your breath. Very realistic. The real cool thing is that when you dive, if you stop swimming, you float back towards the surface, unless you're so deep that you would have neutral buoyancy in the real world, in which you descend. Somebody behind the programming seems to know something about freediving. The most cool thing is that around in the waters you can find oysters, and for each oyster you collect, your sex appeal increases! Aparently, that's the image of freedivers around (which I don't object to).

Of course, you can't go buying carbon fins or smoothskin wetsuits or anything like that. It isn't like it's THE freediving game, but I get a lot of fun out of it, because the city is so huge, and there are so many waters you can freely go diving in. Like any good freediving day, "where do we go today?", "who cares, let's just stroll into the sun and see what happens".

Anyway, just wanted to throw my recommendation. And no, I don't get percentages.

Anyone know other games with freediving content?

I must admit, the ability to dive in GTA makes the game even better. The only other game with freediving content that comes mind is metal gear solid (1 or 2, don't remember). Of course that game was much more linear than GTA and there was much less accesible water.

Blue waterhunter can now be downloaded for free. I tried it once and it sucked a lot :p

I didn't play any games lately but I remember some nice water scenes in "Gothic II". The ocean contained ordinary fish and sometimes mantas and sharks. The fresh water ponds and lakes were very nice. Lots of plants, water lilies many fishes... realy beautiful.
Of course you drowned when you've been down for too long.

Ok, seriously - Eric Fattah must be spending way too much time on the computer!!

There's a fair bit of breath hold diving in Tomb-Raider
but....
The opening sequence of Splinter Cell.......It has the main character, freediving with mono-fin down a fixed line, in the dark with night vision googles on, and when he activates them he's surrounded by sharks:cool:

In the persistent online game 'World of Warcraft' there are some quests that require freediving to retrieve items from the sea or battle monsters underwater. It's not a realistic view of the sport though as magic items and spells can increase your time underwater.

WoW - great game! yeah, i really do enjoy swimming around and looking at the trutles.. and sutff.. *awww* the only "diving" i've done outside of a pool, lol.

I've always wanted to create an online game that was in an aquatic setting, where players could dive for resources and materials. That would be fun.
Im not very good at 3D modeling though.

Ecco the Dolhin?

In the next version - the 3D one, there are really nice screens. I worked at the company, wher it was developed, I saw some scenes from it.
Here are some pictures:

OK, here are more pictures of the game:

Hi :)

I'll add mine, http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/
It's an oline role playing game. There is water and you can swim in it. There are a few quest to do, like gathering pearls. You die if you stay too long under water. Unfortunatly, it cost a small amount of money every month to be able to play it, but it's a great game that has a lot to offer. It's very popular, there are 6.5 million people playing it.

Would anyone be interested in a persistant online freediving game?

You would have a character that you train (with some things that can be useful in real life, like static tables), then you could compete with that character to earn money to buy equipment and toys (boats, scooters, ect). There could be co-operative (finding players to be safety divers for your next big dive) and competitive (competitions for money) gameplay.

Any ideas?

I know it's an old thread and most of you probably aren't playing videogames anymore (considering the average age of the users in DB), but I just thought I'd mention it...

So a few days ago there was this new game released called Just Cause (yes that's the name of the game, don't ask me). It's basically GTA on a tropical island AND it has some freediving content in it. It's not much, but if some of you (like the creator of this topic) enjoyed diving and swimming in San Andreas, you're going to love it in Just Cause.
The island(s) is HUGE (at least 2 times the size of the whole San Andreas map) and there is lots of water everywhere. But not only there is water, there are also many different water vehicles like all kinds of boats, jet skis and even underwater scooters (yep, DPVs). Most of the landscape is covered with wild nature and little fisher villages but there are also a few really big metropolises.

Here are some pictures I shot. The darker pics are taken in really deep water and the pics with greenish water are taken right at the shore.

A relatively low budget game, but damn it's fun.

There is a new game just released in the last days: [ame="http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B000EMG7II/028-7769298-3266151?ie=UTF8&tag=apneabase-21&linkCode=xm2&camp=1638&creativeASIN=B000EMG7II"]Diver: Deep Water Adventures[/ame]. Probably more scuba than freediving, but the trailer does not look too bad. It seems to have a lot of features. Made in Russia; there are [ame="http://www.diver3d.ru/self.php?page=news&lang=rus"]Russian[/ame], [ame="http://www.diver3d.com/"]English[/ame], [ame="http://www.diver-game.de/"]German[/ame] and [ame="http://www.sdll-fr.com/jeux-video/jeu_Diver-Deep-Water-Adventure_31.html"]French[/ame] versions available. Apart from Germany and France, the producer still looks for distributors - so it might be interesting for some of you from the business point of view too.

There is a nice trailer available:

I found also couple of other diving related games on the German Amazon website:
