Some years ago, a PC game called Blue Water Hunter was released, a spearfishing game. A friend of mine aquired it, but it had so many technical flaws that we were left dissapointed; we simply couldn't play it.
For so long, I've yearned for some gigantic freediving game, just for when I can't go get wet because of season, the price of gas, etc. But I figured that there would never be a market for such a game, so it would never be made. No game developer creates a huge game without some kind of really catching gaming element, and with freediving only the freedivers would find the bare freediving in itself a magnet gaming element. So I decided to accept cold Scandinavian weather, etc.
That is, until I bought Grand Theft Auto - San Andreas (for entirely different reasons!).
This is obviously not a freediving game. And yet the people behind it have found time to include that your character can go into the water and swim around (which you couldn't with previous GTA games, then you drowned). You can even dive down into the water now! And when you do that, the scenery below is very well crafted with sea grass, schools of fish, and even the occasional turtle or dolphin swimming around! The huge game city is loaded with beaches and cliff walls that you can go explore if you get tired of slaughtering drug dealers or running down cops, etc.! I have to admit I spend more time in the water than in the streets. Go figure.
The cool thing is that the more you go diving in your pimp suit or what ever, the bigger your lung capacity becomes and the longer you can hold your breath. Very realistic. The real cool thing is that when you dive, if you stop swimming, you float back towards the surface, unless you're so deep that you would have neutral buoyancy in the real world, in which you descend. Somebody behind the programming seems to know something about freediving. The most cool thing is that around in the waters you can find oysters, and for each oyster you collect, your sex appeal increases! Aparently, that's the image of freedivers around (which I don't object to).
Of course, you can't go buying carbon fins or smoothskin wetsuits or anything like that. It isn't like it's THE freediving game, but I get a lot of fun out of it, because the city is so huge, and there are so many waters you can freely go diving in. Like any good freediving day, "where do we go today?", "who cares, let's just stroll into the sun and see what happens".
Anyway, just wanted to throw my recommendation. And no, I don't get percentages.
Anyone know other games with freediving content?
