guys,

im having trouble finding the correct amount of weight i need for staying under ( but not drowning :)) running about 8lbs and still having trouble staying under.

5ft 11 and 14 stone of air by the looks of things

You can always pick up various sized rocks to compliment your belt weight and find something that feels comfortable.

Then weigh it when you get out.

It depends on how deep you are going as well, to be neutrally or negatively buoyant at 10m will need more weight than to be the same at 20m. this is due to the compression of the air in the neoprene of your wetsuit by the pressure of the water which increases with depth. I have a 5mm two piece suit with 8kg on a belt and 1.4kg in ankle weights to keep my feet down. The main thing is to be positively buoyant on the surface without having to breathe in.

Greg.

The general idea is you need less weights the lower you go.

I use about 8.5-9kg with my 2piece wetsuit in less than 5m of water.

I use about 7.5-8kg in about 10m - but at 7m I'm already sinking fast!

And I haven't hunted much deeper than that :p I'm a rookie!

I'm 80kg and 5'10". I'm not sure what all of that all converts to though :-/

Best thing to do is, at the surface peak only your eyes out of the water and hold a normal breath, either take off or add weight until you are neutral and can keep only you eyes past the surface with out treading water.
When you achieve this, it means you are properly weighted.

Dom.
